Successful photodynamic therapy in a pediatric patient with difficult warts

Abstract: Many clinical studies reported the safety and efficacy of PDT in the treatment of VWs. Chong and Kang reported complete healing of a recalcitrant acral VW after three PDT sessions. 5 Recently, Huang et al. reported that, compared with cryotherapy, the combination of superficial shaving and PDT results in a better healing and a lower recurrence rate of warts. 4 In our case, clearance of warts was achieved after only two sessions, with minimal side effects and no recurrence at one-year follow-up. “…In each session, the patient experienced mild burning sensation. Complete clearance of the treated warts was seen 6 weeks after the second treatment with no recurrences at 1-year follow-up (Borgia et al, 2020b). Huang et al described the exciting case of an 18-year-old female who completely resolved her 2 year history of resistant multiple warts in the right foot after curettage plus PDT.…”

“…6 In this study, we confirm the high efficacy and safety of C-PDT with 5-ALA in the pediatric setting. 4,7,8 An otherwise healthy 5-year-old female was brought to our attention by her parents for a 30-months history of multiple skin-colored, verrucous papules in the perineal area (Figure 1A). She had been previously visited by many physicians (both pediatricians and dermatologists) with a diagnosis of GWs, and treated with imiquimod 5% cream and cryotherapy, which were ineffective, and poor tolerated by the patient.…”
