Successful and available: interface design exemplars for older users

Abstract: An increasing number of older people will need to use computers and computer related systems in the future to avoid social exclusion and enable them to live more independently. For example, we can envisage the web becoming the first source of information on bus timetables or council collections, and even doctor or hospital appointments being handled by a Web applications. There will therefore be many interface designers searching for pointers to good design for older people, a user group which is significantly… Show more

“…Previous research has shown that older people do have unique needs in terms of abilities to perform computer-based tasks successfully (Hawthorn, 2000;Kelly & Charness, 1995). Zajicek (2004) once expressed in her study that there are considerable social and economic reasons why interface designers should rise to the challenge of designing interfaces that are usable by older people. Middle-aged people between the ages of 45 and 54 are some of the important subjects in human-computer interaction (HCI) research areas.…”

“…number of items to show in group when handling a list of retrieved results, allowing barge-in or not, time in seconds allowed to record messages). In order to improve these capabilities, we propose the incorporation of new user profiles that allow the distinction between young and old people (following the indications suggested by Zajicek (2004) and Wolters et al (2009)) or between men and women. On the other hand, the process of detecting this information could be based on using runtime modules or based on the information provided from the database after the user goes through a previous verification process.…”

“…This will be always made under supervision of human tutors in the job social centres where these people are working. In this sense, several meetings have been carried out with dedicated centres as GUREAK, ATZEGI Y TASUBINSA which agree with configuring the behavioural analysis in order to improve, as possible, the integration of these people into work environments (Chia-Fen, 1999;Zajicek, 2004).…”
