Subtype Differentiation of Renal Cell Carcinoma Using Diffusion-Weighted and Blood Oxygenation Level–Dependent MRI

Abstract: For characterizing RCC subtypes, DWI and BOLD MRI at 3 T may be useful, but the current technique of BOLD MRI seems to have a limited diagnostic accuracy.

“…ADC values were determined similarly in nearly all studies (i.e., using ROI placement over solid portions of the tumor). However, in one study for renal malignancy subtype differentiation, the ADC values were determined for the whole tumors instead of for the solid portions of the tumors [21]. Unclear risks arose from methods in four studies in which readers measured ADC values in consensus or in which the authors did not specify whether readers worked independently or in consensus [18,19,22,23].…”

“…Unclear risks arose from methods in four studies in which readers measured ADC values in consensus or in which the authors did not specify whether readers worked independently or in consensus [18,19,22,23]. Risks were considered unclear in four studies using 3-T scanners instead of 1.5-T scanners [8,16,19,21].…”

“…137,138 Blood oxygenation sensitivity steady state (BOSS) imaging, based on a similar principle of measuring the frequency shift of deoxyhaemoglobin, has also been used for studying tissue oxygenation. 139 Other imaging techniques are NIR oximetry, which measures the fractional oxygenation status of haemoglobin, and ultrasoundephoto-acoustic tomography (UPAT), which measures the optical contrast between oxyhaemoglobin and deoxyhaemoglobin.…”
