“…Surgical interventions include proximal femoral varus osteotomy, Salter innominate osteotomy, acetabular shelf procedure or combination of femoral and pelvic procedures. Femoral varus derotation osteotomy has been one of the most reported and studied methods in the literature since proposed as an alternative for the treatment of LCP disease by Axer (12). It has also been mentioned by several authors as an effective surgical treatment modality in order to obtain congruency of the affected hip joint (13, 14).…”

“…A beneficial effect of the osteotomy per se -increased vascularization of the femoral head -may be of additional significance (Axer et al 1973, Puranen & Heikinen 1976. A prerequisite is that the operation is performed early in the course of the disease (Lloyd-Roberts et al 1976).…”

“…On the contrary, the leg length seemed to be as well preserved in the operated as in the non-operated group. A spontaneous correction of the CCD-angle after varization osteotomy is described by Axer et al (1973) and is possibly due to the effects of disturbing the trochanteric apophysis. The length equalization may in part be due to stimulation of epiphyseal growth by the osteotomy similar to that observed after femoral fractures in children (Edvardsen & Syversen 1976).…”

“…Tibial shortening is a factor in a unilateral abduction brace regimen but should be less where bilateral abduction plasters (Petrie & Bitenc 1971) or bilateral abduction splints (Lovell 1978) are used. The increasing use of operation to obtain containment (Axer et al 1973, Salter 1973, Lloyd-Roberts et al 1976) also affects femoral and lower extremity length and accurate assessment of discrepancy prior to and after operation is important. Innominate osteotomy will lengthen the lower extremity whereas proximal femoral varus osteotomy produces shortening.…”
