The study area is located in the Quseir–Safaga area of the Egyptian Red Sea Coast. This location considered one of the most promising areas for touristic villages depending on groundwater domestic uses as well as geothermal energy. The geothermal energy is considered one of the promising sources in the studied area. Nevertheless, few attempts have been carried out to evaluate the geothermal setting of the area. The present study aims to throw more light on studying the predominant structures in the area and their relation with geothermal manifestations, as well as defining the hydrothermal system type at the study area. Achieving this goal is dependent on using aeromagnetic data in the form of reduced to northern Pole (RTP) anomalies. These data were subjected to different techniques of processing and interpretation through both qualitative and quantitative analyses. Two-dimensional (2D) modeling of aeromagnetic data has been used to simulate the subsurface structure configuration along some selected profiles trending in NW-SE and E-W directions. In addition, a conceptual model of the hydrothermal system was built based on geophysical results of the aeromagnetic data analysis and processed numerically to obtain a 2D hydrothermal model that contains all simplifications and assumptions made on the conceptual model. The HYDROTHERM Interactive (HTI) program version 3 was used for two-dimensional simulation in the study area to study the temperature and pressure distributions beneath the study area. The results of the study showed that the depth to basement from the ground surface ranges from 20 to 1200 m. The hydrothermal simulation in the area indicated that the origin of thermal water is due to high heat flow and deep groundwater circulation controlled by structures in the subsurface reservoir. Under the thermal water, the water speeds up and flows through the fractures and faults. In general, the high heat flow in the Eastern Desert is associated with shallow basement depths. Thus, the modeled hydrothermal system is considered a dynamic type.

The Abu Gharadig Basin is regarded as one of the most essential in Egypt, serving as the country’s second most important reservoir for hydrocarbon production. Our present study is focused on the investigation of geothermal resources in the Abu Gharadig Basin. Using airborne magnetic and gravity surveys, as well as temperature well records, we can identify possible geothermal sources in this region. Power spectral analysis was used on the airborne magnetic measurements to compute the Curie Point Depths (CPDs) and display the temperature gradients and heat flows regime in the study area, while on the gravity data, 3-D density inversion was used to identify the basement surface. Real data from bottom-hole temperature (BHT) logs and geological data (structural and stratigraphic data from prior studies) were used to cross-validate the geophysical maps and to ascertain the stratigraphy and structural setting beneath the study location. The depth of the basement rock, according to the studies, ranges from 4.5 to 7 km, and the CPDs run from 17 to 22 km. Furthermore, the estimated temperature gradients vary from 25 to 34 degrees Celsius per kilometer, whereas the heat flows vary from 52 to 86 mW/m2. Generally, there is a correlation between shallow curie depths, uplifts on basement rocks, and sites of high heat flow, indicating that basement rocks are primarily accountable for the geothermal potential of the basin.

A New Edge Enhancement Filter for the Interpretation of Magnetic Field Data

One of the main goals of the interpretation of magnetic data is the imaging of the boundaries of subsurface structures. In this study, a new edge detector called improved horizontal tilt angle (impTDX) has been introduced and tested on synthetic and measured magnetic data. The filter exhibits high efficiency not only in detecting the boundaries of the sources, but also in determining magnetic sources from different depth levels. The impTDX filter produces more precise and sharper boundaries, increases the discernibility of neighboring anomalies, has the advantage of avoiding creation of false edges, and is less sensitive to noise compared to other known filters, which minimizes the uncertainty in the data interpretation. The proposed filter has been applied to aeromagnetic data from Sohag, Egypt. It highlighted the subsurface magnetic structures with high resolution where a structural map showing normal faults demarcating the subsurface causative horsts and grabens was constructed. This map confirms that the Nile grabens are of tectonic origin related to the opening of the Red Sea. Our findings indicate that the proposed filter can be considered as a valuable tool in mapping of subsurface magnetic structures.
