Substrates Matter: Influence of an Adjacent Dielectric on an Individual Plasmonic Nanoparticle

Abstract: Studying the plasmonic properties of metallic nanoparticles at the individual nanostructure level is critical to our understanding of nanoscale metallic systems. Here we show how the presence of a nearby dielectric substrate modifies the energies of the plasmon modes of a metallic nanoparticle. The adjacent dielectric lifts the degeneracy of the dipole plasmon modes oriented parallel and perpendicular to the substrate, introducing a significant energy splitting that depends strongly on the permittivity of the … Show more

“…Previous studies of gold particles on dielectric surfaces have correlated the magnitude of the red shift of the resonance with the permittivity of the surface by invoking the image dipole approximation. 39 Thus the longer wavelength of the resonance of particles on silicon (dielectric constant, ϳ 16.3 at resonance, 561 nm) relative to that of particles on quartz ( ϳ 2.13) is as expected. However, the further redness of the primary scattering resonance of particles on a gold film relative to particles on silicon indicates that the radiative mode of a nanoparticle antenna is more strongly coupled to the gold film ( 668 nm ϳ Ϫ14.1 ϩ 1.02i) than to silicon.…”

“…1.2 particles 23 . The particle surface density for the gold nanoparticles in the array was determined to be 1 np per 220 ± 60 nm 2 , therefore the majority of particles are unlikely to show inter-particle interactions 24 , there will however be some particles that are in closer proximity that may then interact.…”

“…size of the nanorods and distance to the quantum emitter, is well above the single nanometer regime, the hybrid system can be described by fully classical scattering simulations. Consequently we can employ the time averaged Poynting vector to formulate the conservation of energy and model the energy flux [43,44]. The scattered and absorbed powers are obtained through Poynting's theorem:…”
