Substrate integrated power combiners

Abstract: In this work, preliminary results of a study on printed power combiners configurations for power-amplifier applications are presented. The proposed configuration is based on Substrate Integrated Waveguide (SIW) and multilayer PCB technologies. In particular, a printed horn combiner/divider was considered as a basic building block of a power combining amplifier. Simulated results of the passive combiners will be presented and discussed along with measured results.

“…Due to the low power level of an individual solid-state device, it is necessary to combine power from multiple devices to obtain the desired power level. Some power-combining technologies based on finline and substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) have been proposed [1,2,3,4,5,6]. In [1,2,3], the power combiners based on finline and double-layer finline have been proposed.…”

“…These combining structures can be fabricated using the standard printed circuit board (PCB) process and easily assembled into three-dimension waveguide structure. SIW has been a popular transmission in recent years [4,5,6,7], which can offer a compact and costeffective solution for integrating microwave circuits. Some combiners based on SIW have been proposed [4,5].…”

“…In fact, a considerable number of SIW based devices designed using commercial codes, like HFSS (Ansys HFSS), have been presented over the years. Filters [2-4, 23, 24], power dividers [5][6][7], antennas [8,9,25] and other devices have been successfully designed and realized. However, more effective analysis methods can be devised implementing techniques that, even less general than the one used in commercial codes, are more efficient in terms of both CPU time and occupied memory.…”
