The green supply chain (GSC) can effectively reduce the waste of resources and avoid environmental pollution. For a closed-loop supply chain network consisting of multiple manufacturers, multiple retailers, and multiple consumer and recycling markets, we assume that retailers are responsible for the recycling of used products, manufacturers use raw materials to produce new products and recycled products for remanufacturing, and government departments subsidize all manufacturers and retailers for GSC technology investment. Then, the equilibrium conditions of manufacturers, retailers, demand markets, and recycling markets are obtained by using the variational inequality method, complementarity theorem, and Nash equilibrium theory, and the variational inequality model of the closed-loop supply chain network multiphase equilibrium is established. Based on numerical simulation, the optimal technology investment decision of green supply chain under different government subsidy rates, and the influence of market structure and enterprise cost asymmetry on the equilibrium solution of supply chain network are analyzed. The results show that government subsidies can effectively promote enterprises to upgrade their level of GSC technology investment. The intensification of enterprise competition and the asymmetry of enterprise costs will affect the composition of enterprise profits and the allocation of profits between enterprises, and the former will weaken the effect of government subsidies.

New energy vehicles have been recognized as a sustainable alternative to lower gasoline consumption and emissions in the transportation sector. To alleviate environmental pressure, a spectrum of government policies has been introduced to inspire the production and penetration of new energy vehicles (NEVs). Meanwhile, some of the incentive policies are facing renewals and modifications to meet consumers’ demand of purchase and the present growth of the NEV industry. This means that the understanding of what the current and upcoming policies are, how to formulate policy portfolios, and consumers’ purchasing NEV behavior in a response to these policies and its adjustment are of practical and academic importance for the NEV sector. Different from prior research which analyzed the role of government policy as a whole, we here separately examined the impact of policy portfolios (i.e., production policy, purchase/usage policy and recycle policy) on NEV adoption from the product life cycle perspective. The hypotheses were empirically tested by analyzing data collected from 299 respondents in China. The results showed that production policy has a significantly positive impact on financial benefits, esteem needs and infrastructure, whereas it insignificantly influences NEV performance; similarly, purchase/usage policy positively affects esteem needs and infrastructure, yet its effect on financial benefits is found to be insignificant; meanwhile, recycle policy has a significantly positive effect on financial benefits, and esteem needs as well as NEV performance. Furthermore, financial benefits, esteem needs, NEV performance and infrastructure are found to significantly and positively impact on consumers’ purchase intention. Parallel to this, we observed perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use play partially mediating relations between policy portfolios and consumers’ adoption intent. Hints for decision-makers and avenues for future study are discussed in this research.

Collaborative eco‐innovation and green knowledge acquisition: The role of specific investments in Chinese new energy vehicle industry

Eco-innovation has turned into the hotspot of numerous enterprises and governments to gain sustainable development. This study examines how enterprises acquire green knowledge in interorganizational cooperative eco-innovations, exploring the influence of different collaborative modes and the direct and moderating roles of specific investments. In accordance with interorganizational interaction level, the widely used collaborative modes can be attributed to low-(e.g., commissioned research and development [R&D]), medium-, and high-interaction modes (e.g., joint R&D and co-construction of R&D entities). Results from a survey of 172 Chinese firms operating in the new energy vehicle industrial chain support that both specific investments and collaborative eco-innovation have positive effects on green knowledge acquisition. Furthermore, the positive effect of collaborative eco-innovation is stronger for high-interaction collaboration modes than that for low-interaction collaboration modes. Specific investments also play a moderate role in the link of collaborative eco-innovation and green knowledge acquisition; similarly, the positive moderating effect is stronger for high-interaction collaboration modes than that for low-interaction collaboration modes. These findings suggest that when managers formulate the environmental policy, they should encourage collaboration, interorganizational interactions, and specific investments to acquire green knowledge. This paper mainly contributes to open eco-innovation literature by revealing the mechanisms and the boundary conditions under which collaborative mode could effectively promote green knowledge acquisition.
