Substituting hake with sardines? Economic crisis and fish demand in Spain

Abstract: The main objective of this paper is to investigate the existence of an economic crisis-induced demand shift in the Spanish fish market. This is performed by endogenously examining whether the existence of a structural break in fish price trends around 2008, corresponding to the collapse of the Spanish economy, together with an asymmetric and specific price behavior regarding the sign and magnitude of the expected income elasticities of three staple fish species (i.e., sardine, anchovy and hake). Our data corro… Show more

“…Internacionalmente, diversos estudos buscaram compreender fatores determinantes da demanda e do consumo de pescados. Tais estudos evidenciam que fatores como preço, renda, sazonalidade e localização geográfica apresentam grande influência no consumo desse tipo de proteína (Bronnmann, 2016;Bronnmann et al, 2019;Chidmi et al, 2012;Del Valle et al, 2017;Dey et al, 2011;Singh et al, 2014;Vassilopoulos et al, 2012).…”

“…This could be explained by the greater distance between these fishing grounds and the ports and some episodes of sudden and strong reductions in the catches of red shrimp (Aristeus antennatus), the target species of bottom trawling at this depth, mainly due to environmental factors influencing the availability of this species to fishing exploitation [53,54], which have occurred in the study area (personal observations). Moreover, because the economic crisis during the recent years, consumption habits could have changed, reducing the demand for deep water decapod crustaceans of high economic value and increasing the demand for cheaper species, fish and cephalopods, which are caught on the continental shelf [55,56]. The continental shelf and upper slope (strata B-D, between 51 and 500 m depth) showed a fairly stable effort trend, but also a slightly decreasing one after 2013-2014.…”

“…Several factors, as indicated by international studies (Dey et al, 2011;Chidmi et al, 2012;Vassilopoulos et al, 2012;Singh et al, 2014;Bronmann, 2016;Del valle et al⌦., 2017;Higuchi, 2017;Vassilopoulos et al, 2019) and Brazilian research ( Minozzo et al,2008;Melo et al, 2011;Tavares et al, 2013;Figueiro et al, 2014;Barbosa & Sampaio, 2016;Lopes et al, 2016;Fornari et al, 2017;Magalhães Araújo et al, 2018;Ribeiro et al, 2018), may impact fish consumption. Aspects such as price, difficulties in preparation and food taboos associated with the consumption of this type of food may contribute to the reduction of demand.…”
