Use of organic compounds containing nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), sulfur (S), and phosphorus (P) heteroatoms in their molecular structures is one of the most effective, economic, and practical corrosion inhibitors. The effectiveness of the heteroatoms toward metallic corrosion inhibition follows the order: P > S > N > O. The metal‐inhibitor interactions involve the charge sharing between the heteroatoms and empty d‐orbitals of the surface metallic atoms; therefore, a heteroatom with lower electronegativity value is more potent to form strong bonding (charge sharing) with metallic surface as compared to more electronegative heteroatom. Literature study reveals that almost all corrosion inhibitors have either one or more heteroatoms in their molecular structures particularly in the form of polar functional groups, which enhance their adsorption tendency on metallic surface. Present review paper features the collection of some major works that have been published on metallic corrosion inhibition containing these P, S, O, and N heteroatoms. Since now, several review articles have been published describing the application of N and O atoms; however, the reviews on use of P and S heteroatoms are scare. Therefore, aim of the present article was to mainly describe the collection of corrosion inhibitors containing S and P heteroatoms.

Dendrimers as novel class of polymeric corrosion inhibitors: A review

Dendrimers are a new class of highly branched, nano-sized, monodisperse macromolecules that have several fascinating physical and chemical characteristics. They are highly soluble in the polar solvents, contain several surface functionality and high surface area which makes them suitable reagents for industrial and biological applications. Recently, several dendrimers have been investigated as effective corrosion and scale inhibitors for metallic and silica corrosion using experimental and theoretical methods. Generally, dendrimers become effective by forming insoluble metal-dendrimer or silica-dendrimer composite on the surface. Their inhibition performance of dendrimers have been measured using several experimental such as weight loss, electrochemical (EIS and PDP) and surface (EDX, SEM and AFM) as well as computation techniques such as molecular dynamics simulation and DFT based quantum chemical calculations. The interactions between metal surface and dendrimers can be explain through some common parameters such as E HOMO , E LUMO , ∆E, electronegativity (χ), hardness (η), softness (σ), dipole moment (µ) and fraction of electron transfer (∆N). Present book chapter deals with detail description on the corrosion inhibition and anti-scaling behaviours of dendrimers for metals and silica in several electrolytic media.

A series of new metal complexes were synthesized in both bulk and nano size using green methods, starting with the reaction of (E)-N′-[(E)-2bromobenzylidene]-4-oxo-4-(piperidin-1-yl)but-2-enehydrazide with thiosemicarbazide and different metal halides such as CuI·2H 2 O, CuCl 2 ·2H 2 O, CoCl 2 ·2H 2 O, and ZnCl 2 ·2H 2 O, and metal nitrate such as Ga(NO 3 ) 3 ·2H 2 O.Structures of these metal complexes were confirmed using different spectroscopic methods, elemental analysis, electronic spectra, and microanalytical methods (scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy) for nano complexes. The distorted octahedral geometry for all complexes was suggested based on magnetic moments and electronic spectral studies. The cytotoxic activity of the compounds was investigated against human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) and human colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116) cell lines. Most tested compounds had higher inhibitory activity than the standard vinblastine drug. Interestingly, the nano-sized Ga(III) complex 11 was the most potent compound against the two tested cell lines, with 50% inhibitory concentration (IC 50 ) of 2.56 μg/mL for HepG2, compared with the reference drug vinblastine (IC 50 15.6 μg/mL), and IC 50 4.64 μg/mL for HCT-116, compared with the standard (IC 50 13.9 μg/mL). The bioassay results helped us identify new potent and selective anticancer agents.
