Substantial intraspecific variation in energy budgets: biology or artefact?

Abstract: Dynamic energy budget (DEB) models provide a mechanistic description of life-histories in terms of fluxes of energy through biological processes. In these models, life-histories are a function of environmental conditions and of fundamental traits of the organism relating to the acquisition, allocation, and use of energy. These traits are described by the parameters of the DEB model, which have been estimated for over 2500 species. Recent work has aimed to compare species on the basis of differences in DEB para… Show more

“…Yet, S. cerevisiae and B. subtilis can show great plasticity in their life history trajectories because their cell growth depends on food quality (Ferrezuelo et al, 2012; Sauls et al, 2019). If such intraspecific variation is greater than variation in growth between species, it will challenge the detection of broad-scale patterns in life histories across species (Pottor et al 2021). It will thus be interesting to explore if microbial life history variation can be structured in variable environments, in which growth depends on environmental quality (Smallegange et al 2014).…”

“…Each population‐specific set of formatted data and the MATLAB scripts required to estimate the parameters presented in this manuscript are available to download from the AmP online repository (AmP, 2020, see Table S1). Raw data are available from the Dryad Digital Repository http://doi.org/10.5061/dryad.qv9s4mwf1 (Potter, Reznick, et al., 2021).…”
