Submarine wastewater discharges: dispersion modelling in the Northern Adriatic Sea

Abstract: In future studies the time scale for microbiological parameters' decay could be linked to various environmental parameters such as light climate, temperature, and salinity. Interesting information would come from the study of new scenarios with different configurations of the discharge of the pipelines and/or the treatment plants and in particular from the improvements of the 3D version of the SHYFEM model, to take the stratification process into account which occurs during spring-summer, since the Northern Ad… Show more

“…This analysis offers a static representation of the pollution phenomena as it does not consider meteorological, hydrological and marine (tide, stream) parameters. These aspects were considered and assessed in a previous study with the support of a mathematical dispersion model (Scroccaro et al 2005(Scroccaro et al , 2009Ostoich et al 2006). Stretches VI and VII, which correspond to the area from Punta Sabbioni (Cavallino shore, N-E) to the Pellestrina shore (S-W), are those which present the best conditions for faecal contamination parameters (low pollution level).…”

“…The paper highlights the need for an integrated approach (not only river monitoring or sea monitoring, but the assessment of the monitoring data of rivers, bathing and seawaters together with WWTP discharge quality); it is evident that this-in terms of mean annual values-is a static representation and needs to be supported with other evaluations, such as modelling simulation (Scroccaro et al 2009). The analysis of the variance with ANOVA presented for three stretches confirmed the biological impact of river waters and WWTP discharges on the coastal area deduced from mean annual data.…”

“…The coexistence of different interests in coastal areas, that is, the presence of highly populated cities, recreational areas and extensive shellfish farming (Scroccaro et al, 2010) justifies the construction of structures which contribute to mitigate the impact caused by adding residual water into the aquatic environment. Thus, marine outfalls must be considered part of an integrated environmental protection system for coastal zones (Mendonça et al, 2013).…”
