Submarine structural and acoustic attenuation

Abstract: In this paper, the low frequency vibro-acoustic responses from a submerged hull are attenuated using passive, active, and hybrid control strategies. An analytical model representing a simplified physical model of a submarine hull is developed, including the effects of ring-stiffeners, bulkheads, and external fluid loading. At low frequencies, rotation of the propeller results in discrete tones at the blade passing frequency and its harmonics. The fluctuating forces at the propeller are transmitted through the … Show more

“…However, in that paper, the wave propagation in the system and the equations of motion of the plate were studied and described within the scope of the Kirchhoff plate theory. Moreover, hydro -elastic systems which are similar to those considered in the present paper were the subject of papers by Gangemi and Kanapathipillai (2014), Kang (2014) and others listed therein.…”

“…The unsteady external excitation force of the propeller during operation and the friction force of the shafting and bearing caused by the propeller rotation are important excitation sources for the vibration of the shell structure. At present, scholars have paid attention to the exciting force of the propeller on the shell [29][30][31][32][33]. Hassan et al conducted an experimental test on the hydrodynamic performance of a 5-blade high-skew propeller [16].…”

“…Typical submerged systems are ships, submarines [ 48 , 49 ], and also living organisms [ 50 , 51 ]. It is well-known that the detection of the acoustic signature with remote sensors is a field of interest for military purposes [ 52 , 53 ] and also in the study of marine species [ 50 ] as it can give information of the type, state, and position of the considered system. In the military field the main interest focuses on the reduction of the emitted sound originated internally (acoustic signature) in ships and submarines and also in the reduction of the reflected sound ( Figure 5 ), with the purpose of making the system “acoustic” invisible to radars and detecting systems.…”
