Submandibular salivary duct cyst mimicking an external laryngocele

Abstract: The clinical and radiological differential diagnosis of cystic lesions of the submandibular region can be difficult. We report an unusual case of a submandibular salivary duct cyst mimicking an external laryngocele on presentation by appearing to expand on Valsalva manoeuvre, and where computed tomography (CT) scanning was unhelpful in reaching a diagnosis. We present the case, discuss the theories of pathogenesis, and review the literature on the differential diagnosis of cystic lesions in the submandibular r… Show more

“…7 Non-neoplastic cystic swellings of the submandibular region should also be considered: submandibular branchial cyst, dermoid/epidermoid cyst, mucocele, hydatid cyst, cystic hygroma, and salivary duct cyst. 8 Treatment consists of a complete surgical resection of the tumor mass and its metastases. Adjuvant radiotherapy helps sometimes reach a local control.…”

“…The different causes of swelling in the parotid region may include branchial cleft cyst which is “congenital”, or may be “acquired” due to inflammation, obstruction, neoplasm, calculi and trauma [ 6 ]. Also if it occurs in the submandibular region, it can be mistaken for salivary gland abscess, neoplasm, tuberculous lymphadenitis, metastatic node, or any cyst [ 1 , 12 ]. The diagnosis can be proven by various investigations like FNAC, ultrasound, and CT [ 2 , 13 ].…”

“…Back and Fahny have reported submandibular duct cyst resembling a laryngocele in the submandibular region. 5 Submandibular mucocele is fairly uncommon with very few cases reported. Felstead and Patel have reported a submandibular mucocele presenting in the submandibular region.…”
