Subjective variables in travel behavior models: a critical review and Standardized Transport Attitude Measurement Protocol (STAMP)

Abstract: Understanding people's travel behavior is necessary for achieving goals such as increased bicycling and walking, decreased traffic congestion, and adoption of clean-fuel vehicles. To understand underlying motivations, researchers increasingly are adding subjective variables to models of travel behavior. This article presents a systematic review of 158 such studies. Nearly every reviewed article finds subjective variables to be predictive of transport outcomes. However, the 158 reviewed studies include 2864 dis… Show more

“…Perceived behavioral control refers to a person's assessment of his/her own effectiveness and perceived controllability in engaging in a behavior [51,145]. It is, therefore, broadly considered one of the most-important elements affecting individual behaviors [22,25,141,146]. Thus, in this study, we found that perceived behavioral control was significantly associated with the intention to continue to use the Metro.…”

“…Finally, even though sustainable traveling modes are gradually attracting increased attention in academia [17,[21][22][23][24][25][26][27], due to its importance in facing the issue of climate changes, most of the studies in this context have focused on developed countries, while neglecting developing countries. Therefore, this study is among the few studies that attempts to examine some critical factors that may significantly impact the intention to continue using sustainable traveling modes, particularly in the context of the MENA region.…”

“…Attitude plays an important role in travel decision-making and therefore has a significant impact on travel behavior (Lättman et al, 2019). Recent research shows that attitudes have a greater impact on travel decisions than other variables such as socio-demographic or built environment factors (Bhagat Conway et al, 2024). The subjective perception and evaluation of the transportation system by travelers are also the basis for measuring and further improving transportation services.…”

“…(17,18) Recent studies have shown that subjective opinions related to transportation can also in uence people's travel behavior and their assessment of travel burdens. (19,20) Previous studies have shown that the high-risk population perceive a greater transportation burden compared to their counterparts. (21) In these studies, the measures of perceived travel burden encompass not only transportation expenses and accessibility but also safety concerns and opportunities.…”
