“…The unavailability of data on depression and depressive symptoms as an unmeasured confounder is also a major limitation of this study because it has been suggested that the associations with subjective indicators of health especially memory may be confounded by prevalence of depression. 34 In conclusion, subjective memory complaints are associated with a higher risk of incident stroke, especially in persons with a high level of education. In these persons, cognitive tests are not of incremental value because they might perform well, despite their subjective memory dysfunction.…”

“…Some previous studies suggest that subjective cognitive complaints are related to cognitive performance (Lam et al, 2005;Jessen et al, 2007) whereas other studies did not find such a relationship Vestberg et al, 2010). This may be explained by different methodological approaches in relation to clarifying the complaints by a single question or a scale (Reid and Maclullich, 2006) and whether the complaints are solicited or volunteered (Lehrner et al, 2013). Furthermore, it is of importance whether the setting is longitudinal or cross sectional.…”

“…Previous work indicates that these variables are significantly related to both the outcomes of interest and perceptions of memory performance, hence we accounted for their potential confounding effects (Begum et al, 2014; Ficker, Lysack, Hanna, & Lichtenberg, 2014; Lehrner et al, 2014; Snitz et al, 2012). Neuroticism was assessed using a personality scale developed for the MIDUS study (Lachman & Weaver, 1997).…”
