The dental school curriculum is based on theoretical and practical courses. Before real patients, students practice on secure environments like typodonts or simulators to manage the functional and aesthetic properties of tooth restorations. This study aimed to evaluate the quality of class IV aesthetic restorations prepared by undergraduate dental students across different years of training, in terms of surface gloss, anatomic form, marginal adaptation, and proximal contact. Four consecutive classes of dental students (n = 15) were tasked with restoring a class IV cavity on a typodont tooth. Restorations were performed using a universal adhesive and nanohybrid resin composite. Evaluations were performed using the modified FDI criteria. Data were statistically analyzed by Kruskal–Wallis one-way analysis of variance, along with a t-test. The FDI scores for restorations by second-, fourth-, and fifth-year dental students were not significantly different. Third-year students had less success than others only in terms of incisal marginal adaptation. Forty-seven of the 60 (78.3%) restorations were clinically sufficient in all of the evaluated criteria. There were no statistically significant differences between the restorations performed by female and male students. The two-year preclinical training along with theoretical and practical education is sufficient for students to acquire basic restorative skills needed in clinical practice.

IntroductionThe study aimed to determine satisfaction level with the quality of education among dental students and dentists in Croatia based on the acquired knowledge and clinical and soft skills.Materials and MethodsAn online cross‐sectional survey was conducted among 533 dentists and dental students. The questionnaire consisted of four sections with closed‐ended questions. The first section included personal and professional data, whereas the second to fourth sections assessed satisfaction with learned basic dental, professional technical or clinal and interpersonal social or soft skills on a 5‐point Likert scale. The data were analysed using the Mann–Whitney U‐test and linear regression analysis. The significance level was set at .05.ResultsWhen comparing satisfaction scores between dentists and dental students in terms of basic dental knowledge and skills learned, students showed higher satisfaction scores for the categories of “Emergency Medical Situations” (p = .005) and “Ergonomic Principles of Work” (p = .004). Dentists, on the other hand, showed higher satisfaction for the categories “Selection and use of local anaesthetics and local antibiotics” (p = .005, p = .026; respectively). For the type of technical skills from the different areas of dentistry, dentists were most satisfied with “Oral Surgery” (4.26 ± 0.85), while students were most satisfied with “Oral Medicine” (4.29 ± 0.89). Finally, when comparing satisfaction scores with social skills, dentists had lower satisfaction scores in all categories studied (p ≤ .05).ConclusionDental students showed higher overall satisfaction than dentists. The most significant satisfaction was expressed in technical skills learned, and the most considerable dissatisfaction was recorded in the unmeasurable skills category focused on “Career management”.

Background Self-assessment and self-reflection of competencies are crucial skills for undergraduate students. This monocentric cross-sectional study aims to assess the self-perceived knowledge, skills and interests in conservative dentistry and periodontology of third-, fourth-, and fifth-year dental students by the Pictorial Representation of Illness and Self-measure (PRISM). Methods Seventy-five undergraduate dental students (n = 25 of each year) who studied between 2021 and 2022 at the Department of Cariology, Endodontology and Periodontology at the University of Leipzig, Germany, were included. All of them underwent a PRISM-based interview regarding their perceived knowledge, practical skills, and interests in conservative dentistry as well as its sub-disciplines. The distances in the PRISM task (in millimeters) were measured and compared between the groups. Spearman’s Rho was used to reveal correlations between knowledge, skills, and interests in the cohort. Results Perceived theoretical knowledge and practical skills differed significantly between groups for the sub-disciplines periodontology, cariology, restorative dentistry and preventive dentistry (p < 0.05). However, students’ interests did not significantly vary between groups (p > 0.05). In the field of conservative dentistry and its sub-disciplines, significant moderate to high positive correlations were found between knowledge and skills (p < 0.01), and weak to moderate positive correlations were found between interests and knowledge (p < 0.05). Regarding the relationship between perceived interests and skills, only restorative dentistry, endodontology and periodontology were significant and only moderate to weak correlations were found (p < 0.05). Conclusion PRISM revealed differences in perceived knowledge and skills between third-, fourth-, and fifth-year dental students. Correlations were found between perceived knowledge and skills, as well as between interests and knowledge. PRISM may be a promising tool to support students and teachers in dental education.
