Subjective and objective assessment of oxaliplatin-induced peripheral neuropathy

Abstract: Numbness and pain are currently evaluated using subjective methods such as the visual analog scale (VAS). However, because assessment of pain can vary greatly depending on the mood and physical state of the patient at the time of assessment, it is best to evaluate pain objectively. pain vision PS-2100 (PV) is an analytical instrument that was designed to quantitatively and objectively assess sense perception and nociception in patients. The present study examined the correlation of subjective and objective ass… Show more

“…Subjects were instructed to indicate the strength of pain at the time of assessment by marking on a 100 mm horizontal line anchored with “0 (no pain)” on the left edge and “100 (worst pain imaginable)” on the right edge (Yoshida et al 2015c). …”

“…The PV was developed in clinical practice for quantitative analysis of pain perception (Matsumura et al 2012; Lee et al 2014; Ohtori et al 2014; Hiraki et al 2014; Kim et al 2014; Fukada et al 2011; Yoshida et al 2015c). PV is an analytical device that was designed to objectively and quantitatively assess patient sense nociception and perception.…”

“…As it appears likely that the symptomatic arm is mostly on the dominant side, we recommend that PV measurements should be taken on that side. Yoshida et al used PV to evaluate oxaliplatin‐induced CIPN. Fifty‐eight patients were subjected to an evaluation using visual analog scale and PV measurements, but only a slight correlation was observed, indicating no strong link, although the result indicated that objective evaluation using PV could help in the diagnosis of CIPN, and provide further evidence for clinical tests in the future.…”
