Subgingival Microflora in Turkish Patients with Periodontitis

Abstract: The results on the Turkish study population were generally in line with earlier reports on the occurrence and interspecies relationships of certain bacteria in periodontitis. However, A. actinomycetemcomitans was not overrepresented in LAgP, and the serotype distribution resembled that reported from the East. The high frequency of non-serotypeable isolates suggests local characteristics of the species.

“…Data from earlier investigations in Chinese, African and Hispanic populations are also in accord with these findings (2,8,29,33). In contrast, A. actinomycetemcomitans was detected in much lower frequency in Japanese, Turkish, Swedish and American subjects (10,11,15,37). Although different methodologies were employed in these investigations, they clearly demonstrated that the prevalence rates of this pathogen seem to vary among ethnic groups with various periodontal status.…”

“…Many cycles of exacerbation and remission may continue till the alveolar bone is destroyed and the teeth lost . Table 3 lists some of the species most frequently associated with periodontal diseases (Botero et al, 2007;Casarin et al, 2010;Dogan et al, 2003, Gajardo et al, 2005Kumar et al, 2003;Teixeira et al, 2006;Riep et al, 2009). Species associated with chronic periodontitis are predominantly Gram-negative with few Gram-positive anaerobes.…”
