Rivers and their watersheds constitute some of the most dynamic and complex landscapes. Rivers have sustained human communities, and human societies have utilized and altered river flows in a number of ways for millennia. However, the level of human impact on rivers, and on watershed environments, has become acute during the last hundred years or so.This book brings together empirical research and theoretical perspectives on the changing conditions of a range of river basin environments in the contemporary world, including the history and culture of local societies living in these river basins. It provides theoretical insights on the patterns and nature of the interaction between rivers and their use by human communities. The chapters are written from a variety of positions, including environmental science, hydrology, human ecology, urban studies, water management, historical geography, cultural anthropology and tourism studies.The case studies span different geographical regions, providing valuable insight on the multifaceted interactions between rivers and our societies, and on the changing riverscapes in different parts of the world. Este ensaio investiga os fundamentos teológico-políticos da obra seminal de Euclides da Cunha, Os sertões, dando especial ênfase à relação entre messianismo e potencial construção da nação. O desafio deste escrito não é simplesmente aplicar o modelo "teológico-político" à leitura da obra, comprovando-se mais uma vez a tese da equivalência estrutural entre conceitos teológicos e políticos (Schmitt, 2002b; Derrida, 2003;Benjamin, 2006). Mais do que isso, é preciso analisar os conflitos da época a partir da própria intransigência teológico-política, e, assim, compreender as oportunidades e as consequências de suas ruínas (no sentido duplo de destruição material e simbólica, mas também de ruína da própria estrutura teológico-política). O ensaio contribui, desse modo, para nova percepção do papel de Os sertões, crí-tica, mas também aberta ao aprendizado sobre a realidade brasileira que esse clássico ainda pode provocar, no que diz respeito ao complexo messianismo no país.* Agradeço o incentivo de Marisa Velozo e Angélica Madeira, o estímulo intelectual de Pedro Vieira Veiga e Maurício Martins do Carmo, bem como a leitura atenta de Eden Clabuchar Martingo, que, certamente, tornaram este texto mais rico e interessante.

Decolonizing the Northeast: Brazilian Subalterns, Non-European Heritages, and Radical Geography in Pernambuco

This paper addresses histories and geographies of the Northeast of Brazil in the works of radical Pernambuco geographer Manuel Correia de Andrade and his main intellectual inspirations, such as Euclides da Cunha and Josué de Castro. Drawing upon current literature on subaltern spaces, critical race studies and the Modernity-Coloniality-Decoloniality project, I especially consider de Andrade's works that address popular revolts by marginalised and racialised groups in Brazilian history, including the plurisecular saga of Black slaves' quilombos and their role in the abolition of slavery, as well as the formation of Brazilian territories. My main argument is that the marginalised groups analysed in these works, similar to more studied cases such as Haiti's revolutionaries, provided examples of subaltern agency and resistance by taking their freedom by themselves, through direct action, without waiting for legitimation from their European counterparts. Subaltern spaces, intended as spaces of resistance, are key to understanding these movements. The fact that members of the radical circuits of Brazilian and Pernambucan geography in the second half of the twentieth century showed awareness of what today is called the coloniality of power and colonial difference accounts for the effectiveness of studying linguistically and culturally different geographical traditions to decolonise (Western and English-speaking) academia.
