Stylohyoid Complex Syndrome

Abstract: Stylohyoid complex syndrome includes all lateral neck and/or facial pain conditions resulting from an elongated styloid process, ossified stylohyoid ligament, or elongated hyoid bone. Surgical intervention directed at any pathologic point to disrupt this complex relieves tension and offers patients relief of symptoms.

“…Watt Eagle, em 1940, baseado numa casuística de mais de 200 doentes, foi o primeiro a descrever uma síndrome caracterizada por odinofagia, cervicalgia, disfagia e mais raramente dor ou espasmo facial, como consequência da existência de apófises estilóideas anormalmente longas ou com angulação anormal 3,6 . Estimou-se a prevalência em cerca de 4% da população geral, sendo que destes apenas 4% seriam sintomáticos.…”

“…As a result, this may cause the patient to have a sensation of a foreign body, dysphagia, or tightness or pressure on that side of the neck. Recently, Colby and Del Gaudio 4 described a stylohyoid complex syndrome that causes neck and facial pain by an elongated hyoid, elongation of the styloid process, or ossified stylohyoid ligament (as in Eagle syndrome) in an attempt to consolidate 3 separate pathologic syndromes that cause the same symptoms. Any of these structures can irritate the carotid artery or cranial nerves VII, IX, or X. Impingement of the neurovascular bundle from an enlarged hyoid caused our patient pain.…”

“…Eagle's or stylohyoid syndrome is a generally unknown and rarely identifi ed anatomical and clinical condition involving the head and region (1,2). It is characterized by the symptoms of recurrent or permanent throat pain, pharyngeal foreign body sensation, dysphagia, bilateral otalgia, and neck pain (3,4). Historically, stylohyoid pain syndromes have been delineated based upon their etiology, i.e.…”

“…Eagle syndrome proper has been described as a pain syndrome associated with an elongated styloid. The congenital variant, often described as stylohyoid syndrome has been described as a syndrome with pain and symptoms of carotid compression (syncope, presyncope, and even transient ischemic attacks) caused by an ossifi ed stylohyoid ligament (3,6). Eagle's syndrome has also been called: stylohyoid syndrome, styloid syndrome, elongated process syndrome, stylal-gia, styloid-stylohyoid syndrome, styloid dysphagia, chronic styloid angina, temporal rheumatic styloiditis, stylocarotid syndrome and the Garel-Bernfeld syndrome (4).…”
