Studying the effect of shear stud distribution on the behavior of steel–reactive powder concrete composite beams using ABAQUS software

Abstract: Using the ABAQUS software, this article presents a numerical investigation on the effects of various stud distributions on the behavior of composite beams. A total of 24 continuous 2-span composite beam samples with a span length of 1 m were examined (concrete slab at the top and steel I-section at the bottom). The concrete slab used is made of a reactive powder concrete with a compressive strength of 100.29 MPa. The total depth of each sample was 0.220 m. The samples were separated into four groups. The first… Show more

“…Figure 5 illustrates the MPC connectors. The three-dimensional eight-node solid element C3D8R [23][24][25][26] is used to model the steel beam, the concrete, and the studs, whereas the truss element T3D2 is used to simulate the steel rebar. The lines in Figure 4 are not mesh lines, but partition lines.…”

“…A hard contact was used in the normal direction, and a penalty was used with a friction coefficient of 0.45 in the tangential direction [28]. In the present study, the embedded constraint was used to model the contact between the concrete and the reinforcing rebars inside the slab [23,24,26]. Moreover, the studs were tied to the steel flange by using tied constraints in the first model.…”

“…Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is a type of cement that is commonly utilized in concrete and mortar. It is made by heating limestone and clay at high temperatures and grinding the resulting material into a fine powder [1][2][3]. OPC is the most common type of cement utilized in various applications, including foundations, driveways, sidewalks, and walls.…”

“…Due to the availability of its base constituents, economy, strength, and flexibility, reinforced concrete is usually preferred more than steel, timber, and masonry in building construction. However, from a design and structural perspective, RC is not a simple composite material as it comes to mind (Ali et al, 2022;Hamad et al, 2021;. On the contrary, it is a complex material that provides a special bond between two materials (steel and concrete) that differ in their properties.…”
