Studying Metabolism by NMR-Based Metabolomics

Abstract: During the past few decades, the direct analysis of metabolic intermediates in biological samples has greatly improved the understanding of metabolic processes. The most used technologies for these advances have been mass spectrometry (MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. NMR is traditionally used to elucidate molecular structures and has now been extended to the analysis of complex mixtures, as biological samples: NMR-based metabolomics. There are however other areas of small molecule bioche… Show more

“…Therefore, a fresh readout of the inflammatory responses in terms of metabolic pathways underlying NP-induced cytotoxicity remains the aim of the current work. Furthermore, given its robustness, the use of NMR spectroscopy in the analysis of clinical samples like blood, urine, serum, etc., would make the results more reproducible. , The cytotoxic potential of ZnO NPs has been studied in terms of membrane integrity and mitochondrial vitality for a dose range of 0–200 μg/mL. The depreciating values of the MTT to LDH ratio over the exposure range further depicted the toxic potential of ZnO NPs under in vitro conditions.…”

“…However, different platforms have unique advantages and disadvantages and may require care during the sample treatment stages. These analytical techniques have been reviewed extensively elsewhere (Saini et al 2021;Harrieder et al 2022;Moco 2022).…”

“…Therefore, this field of science is equipped with the provision of highly accurate information related to the physiological state of an organism [ 17 ]. Different analytical techniques like gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS), liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS), nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), liquid chromatography nuclear magnetic resonance (LC-NMR), and liquid chromatography solid phase extraction nuclear magnetic resonance (LC-SPE-NMR) have been employed in plant metabolomics [ 18 , 19 ]. LCMS is a more sensitive approach than GCMS and NMR though the major disadvantage of this platform is ion suppression.…”
