Study protocol of a multicenter randomized controlled trial of mindfulness-based intervention versus relaxation to reduce emotional exhaustion in medical students in France: the “Must prevent” study

Abstract: Background: Medical students are exposed to an emotionally exhausting training/work environment and to stressful academic demands. Consequently, psychopathologies, burnout and suicidal ideation are frequent in this population. These factors can also affect their empathy and quality of care. “…A study from the USA with primary care staff (doctors, nurses, allied medical staff) indicated that the Mindfulness-based Wellness and Resilience (MBWR), another approach to mindfulness training, may be feasible and acceptable [ 30 ]. Recent study in France describes a protocol aiming to assess in a randomized control trial the long-term effectiveness and acceptability of a mindfulness-based intervention (MBI) compared with relaxation training (RT) [ 31 ].…”

“…Furthermore, experimental data show that both stress and exogenous glucocorticoids induce behavioural changes characteristic of psychiatric conditions, mainly depression and anxiety disorders [9][10][11][12]. Supporting a person burdened with excessive anxiety is focused on balancing the excitability of the autonomic nervous system, reducing muscle tension and decreasing the level of perceived stress [13,14]. It is well known that cortisol is significantly increased by psychological stressors, especially in chronic stressful events.…”
