Study on the kinetics of S(iv) oxidation in the basic aluminum sulfate wet flue gas desulfurization process

Abstract: Through a stirred bubbling apparatus, the kinetics of S(iv) oxidation in basic aluminum sulfate (BAS) rich solution were investigated by varying the components of the BAS solution, concentration of S(iv), temperature, air flow and oxygen partial pressure.

“…Interestingly, this tendency seems to contradict a previous study that a higher C Al 2 O 3 could hamper the S(IV) oxidation without any inhibitor since the oxidation rate was influenced by ionic strength and dissolved oxygen. 30 This is probably because the inhibitory activity of EG is related to the physical properties (e.g., density, viscosity, and ionic strength) of the BAS solution, all of which increase at higher C Al 2 O 3 , and thereby may partially inactivate the active group of EG. Considering the lack of detailed information, further studying the mechanism of the inhibited S(IV) oxidation is essential for better understanding the relationship between inhibitory action and C Al 2 O 3 .…”

“…A desired BAS solution was obtained using our reported method. 30 In short, quantitative Al 2 (SO 4 ) 3 was weighed and completely dissolved in water and then specified CaCO 3 powder for neutralization was slowly added under stirring for 24 h, followed by slurry filtration. Unlike other sulfites of sodium, calcium, and ammonium that can exist as solids, the aluminum sulfite complex only appears in water.…”

“…For instance, basic aluminum sulfate has been used to absorb SO 2 from ue gas, [9][10][11][12] which proves the high absorptive ability, and our team has carried out the mechanism research. 13 However, research has been rarely conducted on desorption of the basic aluminum sulfate desulphurization-regeneration solution, which is a key step in the renewable wet desulfuration process. Thus far, water bath heating 14 assisted by mechanical agitation, 15 microwaves, 16 ultrasonic waves [17][18][19] or vacuum-pumping 20 has been applied for enhanced desorption, exhibiting some improvements.…”
