Study on the Effect of Helium on the Dielectric Strength of Medium-Voltage Vacuum Interrupters

Abstract: This paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of the dielectric strength of disconnecting vacuum interrupters operating on air and helium. The breakdown voltage Ud was measured in the pressure range from 8.0 × 10−4 Pa to 3.0 × 101 Pa for air and from 8.0 × 10−4 Pa to 7.0 × 102 Pa for helium, while varying the interelectrode distance from 1.0 to 5.0 mm. Dedicated laboratory workstations were used to determine the actual pressure values in the vacuum interrupters tested and to precisely measure and r… Show more

“…This is therefore an opportunity to increase the reliability of electrical equipment, which is in line with current trends in the electric power industry. In addition, the use of this type of insulating medium is completely safe for the environment and upholds the environmental trend of eliminating greenhouse gases from the atmosphere [27][28][29][30].…”

“…Additionally, when reading the pressure values from the vacuum gauges, it was necessary to take into account the calibration factors and characteristics provided by the head manufacturer, for each of the gases used in the measurements. Once these factors were taken into account, the actual pressure value in the discharge chamber was correctly determined during electrical strength testing [8,29].…”

“…In terms of industrial applications, recent publications in the scientific area under review are mainly concerned with insulating alternatives to harmful sulfur hexafluoride (SF 6 ) and the detailed analysis of electric arc burning processes in vacuum [8][9][10][11][12]. In addition to the commonly produced extinguishing chambers based on vacuum or sulfur hexafluoride, mixtures of SF 6 gas with nitrogen, in the ratio of 40% SF 6 and 60% N 2 , are currently encountered.…”

“…Bearing in mind ecological aspects and the need to modernize the network infrastructure, the research group to which the authors of the article belong has successfully developed an innovative medium-voltage overhead vacuum disconnector in a closed housing, designed for smart grid (EKTOS) networks in which the dielectric strength of connecting chambers has been increased by using low-pressure helium admixtures as a medium to extinguish the electric arc [6]. Thanks to this solution, the device meets the latest ecological standards and also retains the required dielectric strength over a larger pressure range.…”
