In this study, nanocomposites of cashew tree gum (CTG) encapsulated nano-magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) was prepared and characterized by FTIR, UV-visible, X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), magnetic and conductivity measurements. The characteristic absorption peaks in FTIR and UV-vis spectra of CTG was found to be shifted to higher wave numbers in CTG/Fe 3 O 4 composite, which is due to the intermolecular interaction between nanoparticles and the CTG. The XRD patterns indicated that amorphous region of gum was decreased by the addition of metal oxide nanoparticles. SEM images show that nano-Fe 3 O 4 was uniformly dispersed in the cashew gum segments. DSC analysis revealed that the glass transition temperature and melting behavior of composites were higher than those of the pure gum. TGA results indicated that the thermal decomposition temperature of the composite increases with the increase in concentration of metal oxide nanoparticles. The magnetic properties studied by a vibrating sample magnetometer indicate that electromagnetism of CTG/Fe 3 O 4 nanocomposites were superparamagnetic. The values of saturation of magnetization (M s ) and remanence (M r ) increases, while the coercivity (Hc) decreased with increase in Fe 3 O 4 content in the composite. The AC electrical conductivity of the nanocomposites was significantly increased with the increase in Fe 3 O 4 content in the nanocomposite. Due to the ordered structure of polymer composite, the dielectric constant and dielectric loss tangent (tan d) of nanocomposites were also increased with increase in the concentration of nanoparticles. Thirteen types of fuel pellets were prepared from hydrothermally treated hospital solid waste, hydrothermally treated rice straw, pyrolytic plastic waste residue, rice straw, and Sakhalin fir residue using a flat die pellet machine. Different pellet properties such as pellet density, pellet durability, aspect ratio, physicochemical characteristics, and gross calorific value (GCV) were evaluated as well as compared concerning the European standard specification for residential/commercial densified fuels. In addition, the quality of pellets was compared with coal. The results showed that the pellets made only with hydrothermally treated hospital solid waste, hydrothermally treated rice straw, pyrolytic plastic waste residue, and rice straw failed to meet few individual criteria (<3 wt% ash content, <10 wt% moisture content, <0.03 wt% chlorine content, >96.5 wt% pellet durability, and >600 kg/m3 pellet density) of the European standard specifications. However, most of the mixed fuel pellets satisfied the requirement of pellet properties according to the European standard specification. In particular, up to 16.70 wt% hydrothermally treated rice straw, 1.50 wt% hydrothermally treated hospital solid waste, and 4.76 wt% of pyrolytic plastic waste residue can be blended with Shakhalin fir residue to produce low-chlorine fuel pellets. The gross calorific value of pellets made from the mixture of hydrothermally treated wastes and pyrolytic plastic waste residue (around 22 MJ/kg) showed similar results to that of coal. In the case of mixed pellets, the presence of these hydrothermally treated wastes and pyrolytic plastic waste residue valorized the fuel pellet quality. The main outcome of this study was the production of low chlorine biomass fuel pellets of high gross calorific values blended with hydrothermally treated wastes and pyrolytic waste residues, which opens a new door for utilizing waste in a better way, especially hospital solid waste.

Toryfikacja różnych typów biomasy w reaktorze obrotowym w skali laboratoryjnej oraz wielostopniowym reaktorze taśmowym w skali pilotażowej Torrefaction is a thermal pretreatment process that improves properties of biomass relevant to its use as a fuel. It increases a heating value of the biomass, bringing it closer to the one of coal. That prevents the loss of power due to a decrease in calorific value of the fuel when biomass is supposed to replace coal partially. Along with less hygroscopic nature, in comparison to raw biomass, it allows improving logistics of the fuel. It also enhances grindability of the fuel, which is important for boilers and gasifiers that use pulverized fuel. In this study, four types of biomass were torrefied under different temperature regimes. Tests were performed in two different torrefaction reactors: laboratory scale Isothermal Rotary Reactor and pilot scale Multi-stage Tape Reactor (output up 10 kg/h and 100÷ ÷500 kg/h respectively). The process was characterized using dry mass loss during torrefaction, known as the mass yield. Energy yield was also calculated. Raw materials have been compared to the corresponding torrefied products. The comparison was based on standard set of properties, that is mandatory to be tested for any solid fuel, e.g., results of the proximate and ultimate analysis, the calorific value of the fuel. Obtained results have shown a significant improvement, regarding grindability after torrefaction. Also, hydrophobic nature of raw and torrefied biomass was a subject of tests. The propensity towards the moisture absorption was determined, by long-term storage under constant relative humidity conditions. Decreased rate of moisture absorption was observed for torrefied biomasses when compared with corresponding raw materials.
