Study on the char-forming and synergistic flame retardant performance of SEBS/HIPS/PPO composites applied for cable

Abstract: The halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) styrene-ethylene-butylene-styrene (SEBS)/high impact polystyrene (HIPS)/polyphenylene oxide (PPO) composites filled with aluminium hypophosphite (AHP) and melamine cyanurate (MCA) had been prepared. The thermal stability, flame retardancy, carbon slag structure, mechanical and rheological properties of SEBS/HIPS/PPO composites had been investigated. The research results showed that the thermal stability and flame retardancy of SEBS/HIPS/PPO composites were significantly … Show more

“…Polyphenylene oxide (PPO) has been known as synthetic polymer that widely applied in electrical or electronic equipments, especially in automotive industry due to its electrical insulation and great flame resistance. [2,3] However, the high glass transition temperature of PPO caused it became really hard for processing. Thus, PPO normally was modified by blending to make it become realizable or process ability.…”

“…AHP is usually combined with other flame retardants to obtain better flame retardant performance 28–31 . Zhou et al 32 added AHP and phosphate tailings (PT) into TPU to enhance fire performance of TPU composites.…”

“…In the ablation process, a protective layer is formed in advance to protect the substrate, thereby enhancing the compactness of the substrate. Aluminum hypophosphite (AHP), another type of flame retardant, 35–39 is conducive to form ceramic layer, which may play a role to strengthen char layer 41–46 . Thus, the influence of ZB on the ablative properties of epoxy‐modified silicon rubber and a comparison with AHP‐ and ZB/AHP‐containing counterparts were systematically studied.…”
