BackgroundThe associations of ambient air pollution with hospital admissions (HAs) for overall and specific causes of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), as well as related morbidity and economic burdens remain understudied, especially in low-pollution areas of low-and middle-income countries (LMICs). We evaluated the short-term effects of exposure to PM 2.5 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm), PM 10 (particles with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm), and SO 2 (sulfur dioxide) on HAs for CVDs in Panzhihua, China, during 2016-2020, and calculated corresponding attributable risks and economic burden. MethodsWe used a generalized additive model (GAM) while controlling for time trends, meteorological conditions, holidays, and days of the week to estimate the associations. The cost of illness (COI) method was adopted to further assess corresponding hospitalization costs and productivity losses.Results A total of 27 660 HAs for CVDs were included in this study. PM 10 and SO 2 were significantly associated with elevated risks of CVDs hospitalizations. Each 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 10 and SO 2 at lag06 corresponded to an increase of 2.48% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 0.92%-4.06%), and 5.50% (95% CI = 3.09%-7.97%) in risk of HAs for CVDs, respectively. The risk estimates of PM 10 and SO 2 on CVD hospitalizations were generally robust after adjustment for other pollutants in two-pollutant models. We found stronger associations between air pollution (PM 10 and SO 2 ) and CVDs in cool seasons than in warm seasons. For specific causes of CVDs, significant associations of PM 10 and SO 2 exposure with cerebrovascular disease and ischaemic heart disease were observed. Using 0 μg/m 3 as the reference concentrations, 11.91% (95%CI = 4.64%-18.56%) and 15.71% (95%CI = 9.30%-21.60%) of HAs for CVDs could be attributable to PM 10 and SO 2 , respectively. During the study period, PM 10 and SO 2 brought 144.34 million Yuan economic losses for overall CVDs, accounting for 0.028% of local GDP. ConclusionsOur results suggest that PM 10 and SO 2 exposure might be an important trigger of HAs for CVDs and accounted for substantial morbidity and economic burden.

Objective: To extend analyses of nutrition transition in developed countries to China within the framework of the 3Vs rule considering degree of processing starting with industrially processed foods (IPFs, Rule 1), plant/animal calorie ratio (Rule 2), and food diversity through nutrient intakes (Rule 3). Design: Total and main food group (n = 13) calorie intakes, percentages of animal and IPF calories, adequacy of the Dietary Reference Intake (DRI) and prevalence of chronic diseases were retrieved from scientific literature and international databases. Setting: China, 1990-2019 Participants: Overall population Results: The total calorie intake decreased by 9% over thirty years while the prevalence of chronic diseases substantially increased. Percentages of IPFs (Rule 1) and animal (Rule 2) calorie intake shifted from 9 to 30% and 2 to 30%, respectively. Meanwhile, the overall DRI adequacy (Rule 3) did not improve, with calcium and retinol deficiencies in 2019, and, although remaining above DRI, iron, copper, magnesium, and vitamins E, C and B1-B9 intakes regularly decreased. Notably, the prevalence of obesity increased five-fold, paralleling the exponential increase in IPF calorie intake. Both sources of calories were highly correlated with prevalence of main chronic diseases. Conclusions: Despite a slight decreased of total calorie consumption and rather good compliance with DRI, the farther the Chinese population moved away from the 3Vs rule during the 1990-2019 period, the more the prevalence of chronic diseases increased. Further analyses on foods’ transitions will be better assessed when advocating sources/quality of calories (Rules 1/2), rather than only nutrient composition (Rule 3).

ObjectivesTo explore sex differences and dose–response relationships between nine urinary polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) metabolites and neutrophil–lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet–lymphocyte ratio (PLR) and complete blood counts among coke oven workers.Design and settingA cross-sectional study with stratified sex was conducted in Shanxi, China.ParticipantsA total of 458 male workers and 226 female workers were selected.Primary and secondary outcome measuresGeneral linear models, p values for trend tests and natural cubic spline models were used to explore the dose–response relationships between nine urinary PAH metabolites and NLR, PLR and complete blood counts.ResultCompared with male workers, female workers had lower exposure level of PAH (0.95 ng/mL vs 1.38 ng/mL). Only among female workers did we observe that a 1-unit increase in lg(1-OHPyr) was related to a 0.149 (95% CI: 0.055 to 0.242; p for trend=0.041) and 0.103 (95% CI: 0.025 to 0.181; p for trend=0.007) increase in lg(NLR) and lg(PLR), and a 0.116 (95% CI: −0.179 to –0.054; p for trend=0.007) decrease in lg(lymphocyte counts (LYMs)). A 1-unit increase in lg(2-OHNap) was related to a 0.045 (95% CI: 0.003 to 0.086; p for trend=0.037) increase in lg(PLR) and a 0.029 (95% CI: −0.056 to –0.002; p for trend=0.030) and 0.016 (95% CI: −0.029 to –0.003; p for trend=0.010) decrease in lg(white blood cell counts (WBCs)) and lg(haemoglobin (HGB)).ConclusionFemale workers’ NLR, PLR, WBCs, HGB and LYMs may be more susceptible than those of male workers when affected by PAH.
