Study on Stability and Stability Mechanism of Styrene-Acrylic Emulsion Prepared Using Nanocellulose Modified with Long-Chain Fatty Acids

Abstract: In this study, nanocrystalline cellulose (NCC) was grafted with lauric acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid and used as stabilizer to prepare styrene butyl acrylate emulsion. The properties of the emulsion were determined, and the mechanism of modified NCC (MNCC) stabilized emulsion was analyzed. Results showed that long-chain fatty acids were grafted to NCC through esterification initiated at a low temperature. When the dosage of L-MNCC, P-MNCC, and S-MNCC was 0.05%, the styrene-acrylic emulsion had 92.5%, 9… Show more

“…In our previous studies, we investigated the graft copolymerization method of nanocellulose, grafting high fatty acids with FeSO 4 /H 2 O 2 system or 2(NH 4 ) 2 SO 4 ·Ce(SO 4 ) 2 ·4H 2 O as initiator. Under the same reaction conditions, the initiation efficiency of FeSO 4 /H 2 O 2 was better than that of tetravalent cerium ion in ammonium cerium sulfate, and the degree of substitution (DS) of the obtained product was relatively high [ 24 , 25 , 26 ]. However, only a few studies compared the esterification method with that using co-reactant.…”

“…There was also a broad, weak peak at 42.3°. However, the curves had no characteristic CQD peaks, and the crystal structure of the CQDs was not retained in the coating films [ 27 ]. The XRD images of the CQD/SAE coating films were similar to each other, which illustrates that the crystal structure of the coating films was almost unchanged, and afterward, the addition of the CQDs only affected the peak intensity of the crystal structure of the styrene acrylic emulsion.…”

“…Free-radical polymerization is a simple polymer grafting method. For example, cerium ammonium nitrate (CAN), potassium persulfate, and Fenton's reagent can initiate polysaccharide graft copolymerization (Yang, et al, 2021;Zhang, Yang, Lu, Lang, & Gao, 2019a). Littunen, et al (2011) used CAN to graft several acrylics and methacrylic monomers on…”
