Study on macrozoobenthos diversity in Batang Toru River and its surrounding, North Sumatra, Indonesia

Abstract: Batang Toru River is one of the sizable rivers in North Sumatra, encompassing to south and west and stream down to the Indian Ocean. The river area has been used by the local community for several activities, i.e. fisheries and tourism. The macrozoobenthic community structure study was carried out for 3 months in April, July, and October 2019 at 13-17 stations from the upstream to the estuary. Observations were made on the type of macrozoobenthos, meanwhile, data analysis was performed on density, diversity in… Show more

“…Gastropods are one of the most common groups of mollusks found in various substrates due to their high malleability compared to other classes on rigid and smooth substrates (Turra and Denadai 2006;Baharuddin et al 2018;Islamy and Hasan 2020). Wildan et al 2021 report that Gastropod becomes the most abundant taxa in Batang Toru River because of its wide adaptability and tolerance to environmental conditions. However, Gastropods are composed of many species, and their spatial distribution is determined by particular living habitats, certain areas, and certain times .…”

“…These changes are like changes in the function of the watershed, which was originally an area to accommodate, store and drain water from rainfall and then flow it into rivers, becoming residential and agricultural areas [3]. If this happens in many watersheds, it will cause a decrease in water quality [4,5,6,7]. Based on this, it is necessary to conduct research related to the physics and chemistry of water and the biology of eels in the Cicatih and Citaik rivers, Sukabumi, West Java.…”
