Study on lysozyme activity in some fish species

Abstract: Lysozyrne activity was studied in vanous species of fish (13 mild species and cultured rainbow trout Salmo gairdnen and Atlantic salmon Salmo salar). Marked interspecies variation prevailed, most strikingly between rainbow trout and Atlantic salmon; lysozyme activity in the former was at least 20 times greater than in the latter. Tissue distribution was studied in more depth in rainbow trout. Kidneys appeared to have the highest lysozyme levels, followed in descending order by alimentary tract, spleen, slan mu… Show more

“…In fish, lysozyme is recognized to be an opsonin and activates the complement system and phagocytes (Grinde, 1989). Thus, it plays an important role in the host defense mechanisms against infectious diseases (Lundblad et al, 1979;Lindsay, 1986;Lie et al, 1989).The results of this study revealed a significant increase in lysozyme activity in mustard extract group than the other groups. Also, that could attributed to the efficiency of mustard extract as immuno-modulator to resist the dramatically effect of BaP.…”

“…One of the best-known of these antimicrobial substances is lysozyme, an enzyme that hydrolyses the bacterial cell wall mucopeptide N-acetylmuramic acid -N-acetylglucosamine linkage. This enzyme is ubiquitous in the living world and has been reported to occur in the kidney and digestive tissues of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Lindsay 1986, Grinde et al 1988, Grinde 1989, in the kidney tissues of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (Lie et al 1989), and in the eggs of several salmonid fish (Yousif et al 1991).…”

“…Lie et al (1989) noted that the immune response is sensitive to changes in temperature. Muona and Soivio (1992) suggested that water temperature affected lysozyme activity in Atlantic salmon and sea trout.…”
