Study on Europium-Doped Hydroxyapatite Nanoparticles by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy and Their Antimicrobial Properties

Abstract: Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis was conducted on europium-doped hydroxyapatite,Ca10-xEux(PO4)6(OH)2nanocrystalline powders (Eu:HAp) with0≤xEu≤0.2. Antimicrobial studies were also performed for the first time on Eu:HAp. The antimicrobial properties of Eu:HAp nanoparticles with0≤xEu≤0.2on Gram-negative (E. coli ATCC 25922,Pseudomonas aeruginosa 1397) and Gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus 0364,Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212) bacteria systems and a species of fungus (Candida albicans … Show more

“…In the case of Eu-HAps, their antibacterial activity was investigated against S. aureus, E. coli, P. aeruginosa, and E. faecalis, demonstrating their antibacterial action towards all the considered strains, except E. coli, even in the presence of low Eu 3+ amounts [271]. Furthermore, among the investigated Eu-HAps (Ca 10x Eu x (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 , 0 x Eu 0.2.…”

“…Europium-substituted hydroxyapatites (Eu-HAp) can be obtained with a maximum Eu/(Eu + Ca) ratio of about 2 at% [265][266][267][268] in an alcoholic solution at physiological temperature [266,267,269] or in aqueous solutions [265,270,271].…”

“…This phenomenon can be attributed to the highly alkaline conditions in the solution, in which there are enough OH − ions for the reaction with CO 3 2− . Iconaru et al [25] reported similar bands around 1090 and 1040 cm −1 that can be attributed to the PO 4 3− group; moreover, they observed that the contribution of the area that corresponds to the phosphate bands decreases when the europium concentration in their samples increases.…”

“…In the FTIR spectrum of HA with high concentration of substituted Eu (Fig. 4c), the bands corresponding to the vibration of C-O were found at about 1411 cm −1 , which are a characteristic feature of the carbonate group [8]. It was also observed that bands at 2350 and 3492 cm −1 gradually disappear with the increase of Eu concentration.…”
