The recirculation within a deep open-pit mine is a significant factor contributing to the deterioration of the atmospheric environment. However, the underlying mechanisms of how recirculation influences the dispersion pattern of dust clouds within the deep open-pit mine have not been clearly elucidated. In this research, the dispersion patterns of blast dust clouds were investigated in a deep open-pit mine located in northern China. This research initially conducted a similar experiment to verify the existence of recirculation flow in the experimental mine, which can cause dust particles to aggregate toward the upwind slope. In response to the dust pollution issue in deep open-pit mine blasting operations, this study conducted a numerical simulation analysis based on on-site measurement data to investigate the effects of varying natural wind velocity, natural wind direction, and blast location on the diffusion pattern of blasting dust. The results indicate that natural wind velocity (v), natural wind direction (α), and blast location (d) affect the distance between the blast location and the recirculation center point (D recir), subsequently influencing the diffusion pattern of blasting dust. The recirculation flow effect influences the diffusion of dust toward the upwind slope under smaller D recir values, leading to widespread and long-term pollution within the mine. Under larger D recir values, dust diffuses toward the downwind slope with the straight flow of wind, resulting in less pollution within the mine. Through orthogonal experiments, the equation D recir = −120.61v 2 + 237.27v + 0.82d – 0.07α2 + 6.75α + 151.08 was established in this deep open-pit mine, which provides a basis for predicting the diffusion pattern of blasting dust and control strategy in this deep open-pit mine.

Due to terrain and transportation constraints, some open cast mines have to choose a weak basement as their tailings dumping grounds. Therefore, ensuring the bearing capacity and slope stability of dumping grounds on the weak basement is of great significance for the production capacity and economic benefits of open cast mining. To ensure the safety of surrounding facilities and the normal production of open cast mines, the bearing capacity of the dumping ground of a certain open cast mine was calculated using the oblique strip method and verified by numerical simulation. On this basis, the potential failure mode of the dumping ground base was analyzed, and the ultimate bearing capacity of the dumping ground under current conditions was calculated. The results are as follows: (1) The ultimate bearing capacity of the current dumping ground base is 3781 kPa, and the failure mode of the base is overall shear sliding along the base of the dumping ground. (2) When the slope foot increases from 12° to 18°, the stability coefficient and critical bearing capacity coefficient of the slope base decrease by about 21% and 46%, respectively. The slope angle has a greater impact on the bearing capacity of the base, and the height of the slope body has a relatively small impact, with almost no width effect. (3) Compared with the classic Terzaghi method and Prandtl method, the ultimate bearing capacity of the dumping ground base determined using the oblique strip method proposed in this paper is closer to the numerical simulation results, with an error of no more than 5%, a consistent critical sliding surface, and results that are relatively consistent with the engineering practice monitoring of the surface uplift part. The calculation results of the bearing capacity of the weak basement of open cast mine dumping grounds using the oblique strip method are reliable.

Particulate matter (PM) is one of the most harmful exhaust pollutants to human health. In this study, the PM diffusion and distribution emitted by trackless rubber-tyred vehicle under different driving conditions in coal mine was analyzed with numerical simulations and field measurements. The results show that when the vehicle velocity was constant, the proportion of PM with a concentration below 6 mg/m3 was the highest owing to the influences of diffusion and airflow dilution. However, when the diffusion distance is less than 3 m, the PM concentration far exceeds the occupational exposure limit (C = 10 mg/m3) specified in the coal mine safety regulations.With increasing vehicle velocity, the PM concentration gradient at a diffusion distance of 0–6 m showed the most significant slope. Besides, the concentration fluctuation of PM was the largest and relatively high when the diffusion distance was 5–15m. Therefore, the area 15 m from the exhaust gas pipe opening of the trackless rubber-tyred vehicle should be controlled.
