Study on Electrical Resistance Tomography Simulation of Carbon Fiber Smart Layers on Two-Dimensional Curved Surface

Abstract: Based on the piezoresistive function character and the conductivity of carbon fiber smart layer (CFSL), a novel electrical resistance tomography (ERT) system of spherical and cylindrical CFSL has been developed for global health monitoring. Based on the background of the third generation nuclear containment vessel, CFSL is stuck on the surface of the structure, and the effectiveness of the ERT system is verified by virtual experiment. The image reconstruction results show that CFSL on two-dimensional curved su… Show more

“…The electrical potential / resistance mapping techniques have been also employed in systems different than those of the aerospace environment. EPM lies on the exploitation of the intrinsic electrical properties of composite materials which change when the material is damaged [25,[29][30][31][32][33][34]. For CFRPs, the conductive reinforcement within an insulating matrix increases the challenges posed for the application of the technique.…”

“…Since, the EPM does not require expensive external devices, fast and low-cost inspection is feasible. More analytically the requirements of the method are simply i) an electrical current supplier and ii) a digital multimeter [25,[29][30][31][32][33][34]]. …”

“…Compared with the independent distributed monitoring networks, MSL owns a higher integration, a more straightforward and clearer circuit layout, and fewer cables. Thus, it has excellent potential in aerospace [1][2][3][4] vehicles [4], pressure equipment [5,6], and composite materials [1,7].…”

“…Electrical potential mapping (EPM) technique does not require expensive external devices and, consequently, allows a fast and low-cost inspection [122,133,137,140,[229][230][231][232][233][234][235]. Basic requirements of the method are simply i) an electrical current supplier and ii) a digital multimeter [148,228,232,[236][237][238][239]. Within the scope of this section an electrical potential mapping technique (EPM) was developed in order to identify induced damage in aircraft materials.…”
