This study examined the effect of sonication on FTIR and stability at various temperatures in water-based lubricants with a mixture of Carboxymethyl Cellulose (1wt%) and Uncaria Gambir extract (1wt% and 2wt%). The sample was prepared by mixing the two materials into distilled water using a magnetic stirrer and sonicator with time variations of 5 and 10 minutes. Before mixing, the Uncaria Gambir extract solution with water is first centrifuged to remove the dregs in the Uncaria Gambir extract powder. Stability was carried out in an open room (28oC), drying oven (50oC), and refrigerator (5oC). The stability test results showed that the mixture of Carboxymethyl Cellulose and Uncaria Gambir had good stability at all temperatures after sonication for a short duration. The longer sonication duration could fuse the fibrils of Carboxymethyl Cellulose, leading to increasing particle size. FTIR results also show that there is no chemical reaction that occurs. After adding the gambier, there was a new peak at wave 800-1300 cm-1, corresponding to the gambier. The results of this study indicate that the Carboxymethyl Cellulose and Uncaria Gambir solution can be a potential lubricant additive. The Carboxymethyl Cellulose can be a viscosity modifier, while Uncaria Gambir extract for corrosion inhibitor.

Research on Anti-Wear Properties of Nano-Lubricated High-Speed Rolling Bearings under Various Working Conditions

Under high-speed and light-load conditions, rolling bearings often suffer from skid damage and wear. Nano-lubrication could inhibit the wear failure of mechanical parts. Therefore, in this manuscript, nano-lubrication technology is adopted to improve the anti-wear performance of rolling bearings. Nano-mixed oil with different particle sizes and concentrations of silica nanoparticles are prepared. Based on an improved rolling bearing test rig, the friction coefficient, wear depth, and real-time temperature rise under different operating conditions are studied, and the friction and anti-wear mechanisms of the nano-lubricated high-speed rolling bearings are obtained.The results show that the wear failure of the light-load rolling bearings decreased by using nano-lubricated mixture oil. There is no direct correlation between the friction coefficient and wear depth in the rolling bearings. Moreover, the use of nano-lubrication can effectively suppress the wear of rolling bearings, especially in the absence of sufficient oil.This study can provide an effective support for nano-lubrication and its application in anti-wear of rolling bearings.

In this work, a novel anti-corrosion water-based lubricant is prepared. Carboxymethyl cellulose and Uncaria Gambir Extract, all in powder form, were dispersed in water. Corrosion, stability, and tribology test with pin-on-disk reciprocating tribometer were studied. The newly obtained lubricants were designated as Uncaria Gambir (UG), i. e. UG0 (0% volume Uncaria Gambir extract in Carboxymethyl cellulose, UG1 (1% volume Uncaria Gambir extract in Carboxymethyl cellulose, and UG2 (2% volume Uncaria Gambir extract in Carboxymethyl cellulose). The addition of Uncaria Gambir Extract into Carboxymethyl cellulose solution delivered good stability, low corrosion rate, and stable friction coefficient. UG1 has the best stability (no sedimentation), corrosion, and tribological performance. After a one-hour friction test, UG2showed the best performance in terms of CoF, indicated by a 7.6% CoF reduction, compared to UG0. This finding indicates the potential of Uncaria Gambir Extract as an additive for an anticorrosive water-based lubricant for machining application.
