Study of Vegetable Oil Based Biolubricants and Its Hydrodynamic Journal Bearing Application: A Review

Abstract: Mineral oil based lubricants are generally used in hydrodynamic journal bearing. These lubricants are toxic, non biodegradable and harmful for the environment. Vegetable oil being biodegradable and non-toxic has emerged as an alternative lubricant. This paper reviews recent researches related to biodegradable, environment friendly vegetable oil based lubricant and its application in hydrodynamic journal bearing. Important physicochemical properties of biolubricant for hydrodynamic journal bearing have also bee… Show more

“…Nanoscale lubrication has received much attention from researchers as a method for reducing the wear of materials. Common lubrication methods include grease lubrication [16], oil lubrication [17], and water lubrication [18]. Owing to its advantages of high temperature resistance and good lubricity, oil-based lubrication has been widely used and has achieved obvious results.…”

“…One of the ways is by using vegetable oil. Vegetable oil is high in lubricity, viscosity, and flash point [5]. However, vegetable oil is low in oxidative stability and is relatively expensive compared to water.…”
