Study of Vector Boson Scattering and Search for New Physics in Events with Two Same-Sign Leptons and Two Jets

Abstract: A study of vector boson scattering in pp collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb −1 collected with the CMS detector. Candidate events are selected with exactly two leptons of the same charge, two jets with large rapidity separation and high dijet mass, and moderate missing transverse energy. The signal region is expected to be dominated by electroweak same-sign W-boson pair production. The observation agrees with the standa… Show more

“…The most promising vector-boson scattering (VBS) channel is the one where to equally charged W bosons scatter and subsequently decay into two equally charged leptons and two neutrinos. Evidence for VBS in the same-sign WW channel has been reported based on run I data [1,2,3], and the CMS collaboration has observed this process with data from run II [4].…”

“…The two leptonically decaying W s from the VBS are required to have the same charge, strongly reducing the background. Evidence of electroweak production of same-sign W ± W ± j j has been observed by ATLAS and CMS in Run 1 [37,38]. Both measurements have large uncertainties due to the small statistic in the signal region and will benefit from results of 2016 data analysis.…”

“…The study of production of W ± W ∓ j j in which W s are of opposite sign (dominated by γγ → WW VBS) was published by CMS, showing a 3.4 σ excess over the non-VBS contribution only. W Z j j were searched by both ATLAS and CMS as additional result to other diboson (ATLAS, [27]) and VBS (CMS, [38]) analyses. CMS reported a cross section measurement, while ATLAS only set a limit.…”

“…2.1), these WBGBs can be identified with the longitudinal modes of gauge bosons (W ± and Z) and the Higgs-like scalar (H), as long as the CM [132]. The constraint of CMS [133] are given in terms of the F S0 /Λ 4 and F S1 /Λ 4 parameters, which have no direct translation to the a 4 and a 5 ones [134]. Figure reproduced from ref.…”
