Study of validity of autofluorescence-based incipient occlusal caries detection in vitro compared to DIAGNOdent pen

Abstract: The validity of laser induced fluorescence spectroscopy for early diagnosis of occlusal caries irra diated by 403 nm diode laser compared to commercial device DIAGNOdent pen was investigated. The quan titative evaluation parameter based on the fluorescence intensity area ratio of different bands F(440-480 nm)/F(540-700 nm) was built. And the linear correlation analysis between fluorescence result and cor responding DIAGNOdent reading is performed to be r = -0.9085. Moreover, the factors of irradiation laser po… Show more

“…While past studies have described the performance of the DIAGNOdent Pen as an adjunct in the assessment of occlusal caries (Zhu et al ; Teo et al ), the present study is the first assessment of this device for detecting subgingival calculus. Past laboratory studies of calculus detection were conducted with the older DIAGNOdent Classic benchtop system rather than with the handheld Pen system, and used a geometry, which does not approximate the clinical situation.…”

“…Under the state dental practice regulations, standing orders from a supervising dentist are required for authorization of dental sealant placement in a community setting by dental hygienists without an examination by a dentist. There was no dentist at the school site to review the radiographs for interproximal caries or provide an examination; therefore, if a child participant had suspected active lesions, the areas were verified with the DIAGNodent© (a clinically accepted measure in the United States for caries detection) and referred to a dentist for further evaluation and treatment . Teledentistry is one option for dentists to review radiographs and diagnose dental diseases from their dental offices without being physically present at the school.…”

“…The near infrared fluorescence emissions are then measured using a photodetector. This forms the basic design of the DIAGNOdent Classic system [8][9][10], the DIAGNOdent Pen system [11][12][13] and the KEY3 laser system (all from KaVo, Biberach, Germany). In the latter, the fluorescence system is linked to an Er:YAG laser to give real-time feedback regarding calculus detection and calculus removal, allowing an autopilot action for automated detection and removal [14,15].…”
