Study of Using Oxygen-Enriched Combustion Air for Locomotive Diesel Engines

Abstract: A thermodynamic simulation is used to study the effects of oxygen-enriched intake air on the performance and nitrogen oxide (NO) emissions of a locomotive diesel engine. The parasitic power of the air separation membrane required to supply the oxygen-enriched air is also estimated. For a given constraint on peak cylinder pressure, the gross and net power output of an engine operating under different levels of oxygen enrichment are compared with those obtained when a high-boost turbocharged engine is used. A 4%… Show more

“…The polymer membranes with selectivity and permeability can produce higher oxygen concentrations in the intake air [18]. By means of membrane separation technology, up to 35% oxygen concentration in the intake air can be achieved and is reported in the literature [19]. By development of practical applications for oxygenenriching membranes, the results of this paper can be employed in conventional SI engines.…”

“…A four percent increase in peak cylinder pressure can result in an approximately 10% increase in net engine power when the intake oxygen concentration of 4 L/min is used [3]. p mef is a valuable measure of an IC engines capacity to do work that is independent of the engine displacement.…”

“…Some researchers, especially those at Argonne important and received more attention throughout the world in recent years because of the gradually National Laboratory, have conducted many research studies on the application of membrane-based stringent legislated levels for carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HCs), nitrogen oxides (NO x ), and oxygen-enriched combustion to compression ignition and spark ignition engines [30][31][32][33][34]. By far, research particulate matter emissions of diesel engines.…”
