Study of the susceptance control of industrial Static Var Compensator

Abstract: This paper deals with the simulation of industrial distribution system with electric arc furnace -non-linear load of variable active and reactive power. The simulation is considered with all key features such as passive harmonic filters, Thyristor Controlled Reactor (TCR), Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) modeled by Cassie Mayer-model of the arc, transformers and other equipment. Management TCR is based on measuring and managing susceptance in the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). Results of the simulations is that th… Show more

“…The analysis of publications shows that the shunt-connected reactive power compensators based on the TSC and TCR is developed only for the symmetric compensation of the reactive power and practically is employed just for high and medium voltage lines of the utility grid (Acha, 2002;Čerňan & Tlustý, 2015;Chang & Liao, 2017;Dixon et al, 2005;Farkoush et al, 2016;Fuchs & Masoum, 2011;Hong Hu et al, 2015;Igbinovia et al, 2015;Ilisiu & Dinu, 2019;Liberado et al, 2013;Liu et al, 2016;Mathur & Varma, 2002;Padiyar, 2007;D. “…Despite the fact that research in the field of SVCs has been carried out for many years, the topic is still relevant. This fact is evidenced by many new publications devoted to the theory and application of SVCs, e.g., [4,8,12,[38][39][40][41][42][43]. One of the directions of recent research works in this field is the expansion of SVC application areas [8].…”

“…Because of non-linearity, imbalance and asymmetry characteristics, the operation of EAFs causes system disturbances in the supplying network. 14 Consequently, these loads reveal many power quality (PQ) issues such as distortions, unbalances, low power factor, flicker and fluctuations of system voltage. The majority of these PQ problems must be circumvented by using proper compensators with the following requirements 5 :…”
