Study of the Pathological Effect of Escherichia coli Endotoxin in Rams

Abstract: This experimental study was carried out on nine adult rams. Rams were injected intravenously with Escherichia coli endotoxin serotype 055:B5. The regimen of injections is described fully. Blood and semen samples were collected periodically to evaluate the changes in blood and semen picture. The reproductive as well as the visceral organs were collected and examined macroscopically and microscopically. The results of the study revealed that sperm cell abnormalities and serum testosterone level were increased, a… Show more

“…Abnormal sperm, as detected in the animals of this study, can be a consequence of testicular degeneration in cases of mineral deficiencies, high environmental temperature and inflammatory alterations (Van Niekerk and Van Niekerk, 1989;McEntee, 1990;Rege et al, 2000;Sokkar et al, 2003). The animals of this study were submitted to these adverse conditions.…”

“…Besides, the animals are exposed to many pathogens, since that the sanitary conditions in these areas are usually very precarious. These are well known factors that interfere with reproductive activity in domestic animals (Palfi et al, 1989;Van Niekerk and Van Niekerk, 1989;Sokkar et al, 2003. Due to the importance of the integrity of the genital organs on reproductive performance of the animals, some studies about genital alterations in rams were performed around the world. An unique study which was held in the Northeast of Brazil detected testicular degeneration, epididymo-orchitis, and testicular hypoplasia in rams that have already presented reproductive problems (Santa Rosa et al, 1990).…”

“…Potential differentials for testicular lesions would include scrotal insulation (fat deposition, hydrocele, hematocele, skin thickening), trauma, infectious causes, immunity alterations, nutritional imbalances, and ingestion of a toxin . There was no history of trauma or infectious cause in the rams and no evidence of scrotal insulation on examinations.…”

“…Testicular degeneration has many causes including thermal damage, age related changes, toxins, trauma, and infection . In tropical hair sheep, breed and seasonal temperature changes do affect scrotal circumference and semen quality, but rams are still able to maintain good semen quality throughout the year .…”

“…Electronic microscope scanning of sperm has shown adverse effects of gram negative outer membrane (endotoxin) in different parts of spermatozoa such as coiled tail, detachment of acrosome, knobbed acrosome [11], and ultrastructural morphological changes due to sperm immobilization [4,6]. Bacterial contaminations are also dangerous for embryos because they can alter zona pellucida [12].…”
