Petroleum refineries are one of the largest greenhouse gas (GHG)emitting industrial sectors. One of the ways by which refineries can reduce emissions is by reducing the consumption of utilities (heat and steam) required in the refineries or by increasing the throughput of the refinery. Process intensification is one way by which throughput can be increased, and also process heat requirements can be reduced. Cavitation-driven process intensification has created many opportunities in the field of nanoparticle synthesis, wastewater treatment, water disinfection, crystallization, depolymerization, extraction, and emulsification. In recent years, cavitation-assisted bitumen processing has been explored in petroleum refineries. The present Review focuses on the studies related to cavitationally driven transformations in bitumen processing. Case studies have been critically reviewed in various aspects related to the use of cavitation in bitumen recovery from sands, bitumen viscosity reduction, bitumen desulfurization, improving compatibility of rubberized bitumen, bitumen nanoemulsion, and bitumen wastewater treatment. The present Review would be a ready reckoner highlighting the relative advantages and the current status of cavitation-assisted applications of bitumen. This Review also highlights the research gap and proposes future work in the area of cavitation technology for bitumen processing.

The sphere of transport infrastructure is developing rapidly, which underlines the importance of stable properties of bitumen in the construction of road surfaces. A necessary condition for improving the quality of the bitumen binder is its high adhesionto the surface of the mineral filler. The adhesion of bitumen with mineral filler is an important indicator that characterizes the quality of the asphalt concrete mixture, the performance characteristics of the asphalt concrete coating and its resistance to damage. An adequate assessment of these characteristics becomes a key factor in ensuring the durability and reliability of road surfaces. The article analyzes the current state of methods for determining the adhesive and cohesive characteristics of bitumen and mineral filler. The aimof the work is a thorough analysis of various methods used to evaluate the adhesive and cohesive properties of bitumen, with subsequent identification of their advantages and disadvantages. An overview of both traditional and modern approaches used to determine these characteristics is given to better understand the structure and behavior of bituminous materials. Conclusion. The article emphasizes the need for further research and development in the field of methods for determining the adhesive and cohesive properties of bitumen, considering modern requirements for road infrastructure. It is necessary to develop scientific and practical approaches to improving existing regulatory documents considering the characteristics of bituminous materials.It can be concluded that it is necessary to develop new accurate reproducible methods using computer technologies that automate data collection and processing and reduce the likelihood of errors.

The application of ultrasonic waves in the processing of hydrocarbons is a new promising technology that has developed rapidly in recent years. However, the acoustic-induced cavitation erosion phenomenon is poorly studied. In this paper, a comparison study of cavitation erosion was carried out in water and oils with different viscosities produced from Ashal’cha and North Komsomol using an ultrasonic reactor operating at an industrial frequency of 20 kHz. The acoustic spectra obtained from hydrophones during the ultrasonic treatment of fluids can be characterized by using subharmonics of the main frequency and a continuous white noise level. Moreover, the cavitation erosion of aluminum foil under various ultrasound irradiation times and power levels was thoroughly investigated. It has been found that the process of ultrasonic cavitation has a less erosive impact on metal foil in oil due to its high viscosity. In addition, the formation of microflows in the oil phase, which also intensify the erosion process, is hindered. Cavitation erosion in the Ashal’cha oil sample exhibited a higher intensity compared to that in the North Komsomol oil sample. It was found that upon increasing ultrasound intensity in the case of the viscous (Ashal’cha) oil sample, cavitation stability was disrupted. In turn, this led to a reduction in the collapse energy of the cavitation bubbles. The results we obtained enable the assessment of cavitation erosion in crude oil and could be used to improve methodologies for monitoring and optimizing cavitation processes in crude oil.
