Study of surface‐functionalized nano‐SiO2/polybenzoxazine composites

Abstract: A series of the surface-functionalized nanoSiO 2 /polybenzoxazine (PBOZ) composites was produced, and an attempt was made to improve the toughness of PBOZ material, without sacrificing other mechanical and thermal properties. A benzoxazine functional silane coupling agent was synthesized to modify the surface of nano-SiO 2 particles, which were then mixed with benzoxazine monomers to produce the nano-SiO 2 -PBOZ nanocomposites. The notched impact strength and the bending strength of the nano-SiO 2 -PBOZ nanoco… Show more

“…They found that the resulting hybrids showed significant improvements in mechanical properties and thermal stability. 11 Agag et al also reported a polybenzoxazine-titania hybrid with improved thermal properties. 12 However, these organic-inorganic polybenzoxazine hybrids are mostly based on benzoxazines prepared from petroleum chemicals.…”

“…The reinforced impact toughness of the HBPSi‐SiO 2 /BOZ‐BMI can be attributed to that HBPSi‐SiO 2 easily dispersed uniformly in the resin matrix and bonded with BOZ, thus resulting in an organic‐inorganic hybrid interpenetrating network. When the composites are impacted, much more microcracks are formed and much more energies are absorbed accordingly 30. Consequently, the HBPSi‐SiO 2 /BOZ‐BMI composite shows the improved impact strength.…”

“…It has wide application prospects in the new material eld and shows no harmful effects on the environment. 22 The research of Masao Sumita et al showed that extremely small particles, comparable in the size to the LDPE crystalline region, had a prominent reinforcing effect on the oriented polymer matrix. 23 This ller size effect may be applied to other composites of any crystalline polymers.…”
