Study of Serpentinized Ultramafic Rocks of Bela Ophiolite, Balochistan, Pakistan

Abstract: Mineralogical and petrological study of ultramafic rocks of Bela Ophiolite of Cretaceous age revealed serpentinization after harzburgite. It is further evident on SiO 2 /MgO vs. Al 2 O 3 , molar ratio Si/Mg+Fe vs. LOI and MgO-SiO 2 -LOI diagrams. The XRD analysis also showed occurrence of olivine, different members of pyroxene and serpentine groups.

“…These findings are consistent with previous research [16,20]. The high concentration of Mn in stream sediments is attributable to factors such as Bela ultramafic sequence mobility, weathering, and serpentinization [11].…”

“…The sequence offers promising prospects for metalliferous mineral enrichment, such as Fe, Cu, Au, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, Ni, and Cr [7][8][9][10]. The ophiolite succession in Pakistan was formed on the Neotethys ocean floor before the Late Cretaceous collision of the Eurasian-Indian plate [11,12]. The succession has been reported in several locations throughout Pakistan, ranging from the Karakorum-Himalaya region in the north to the Lasbela district in the south [12,13].…”

“…The Mg# values (Mg# = 100 × Mg/(Mg + Fe)) of the serpentinite samples are high and define a very narrow interval (90.1-92.7). Based on the element mobilization analysis, the metamorphism was close to isochemical because the LOI values and SiO 2 /MgO ratios are not correlated (Bashir et al 2012). Due to this assumption the slope of the isocon is 1.…”
