Study of protective properties of half-masks respirators used by miners

Abstract: Purpose. To define coefficient of protection of filtering respirators with elastomeric half-masks PR-7 in conditions of coal mines.Methods. Antidust respirators applied at mining enterprises of Ukraine were tested for determination of their protective efficiency.Findings. As a result, it was found that the protection coefficient of the provided half-masks is in the range from 5 to 34. The main reasons of half-masks protective properties deterioration are poor insulating properties of half-masks, their design d… Show more

“…However, it does not mean that Modification 2 should be rejected. It is believed that it will provide for tight sealing when being used by workers with small face dimensions [17]. Similar half-mask designs are used by well-known manufacturers (for example, Advantage 200 Respirator).…”

“…In previous research [19][20][21][22][23], the results of mathematical modelling were presented, in which the filter is represented by the calculation scheme of interconnected channels, where the air motion occurs between two parallel walls. This did not take into account the curvature of the channels, which, in terms of design, is conditioned by the presence of protrusions of individual parts of the fibres of the filtering layer, which results in a decrease in the size of the channels.…”

“…The solution to this problem was based on the Euler hydrodynamic equations, taking into account fictitious mass forces of resistance by Zhukovsky. Given that, during respiration, the air movement through the filter can be described by the harmonic law, the following formula [21] was obtained for the pressure drop:…”

“…First, the outer filtering layer was replaced. Secondly, the area of the half mask obturator was extended with an effective cellulose material [14]. Thirdly, the respirator fastening system was changed [15].…”
