Background: Milk production is one of the most important economic traits in dairy cattle. Crossing of zebu cattle (Bos indicus) with temperate cattle breeds (Bos taurus) was undertaken to improve the milk production in India. Crossbreeding has resulted in improved production performance of the dairy animlas over the past few decades. Methods: Data on 50 purebred Sahiwal cows from the Livestock Farm Complex, College of Veterinary Science, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad and 50 Holstein Friesian × Sahiwal crossbred cows maintained at the Military Dairy Farm, Secunderabad were utilized to study the influence of breed and parity on various production and reproduction traits. The various traits studied were: Total lactation milk yield (TLMY) Lactation length (LL), Peak yield (PY), Age at first service (AFS), Age at first calving (AFC), Gestation period (GP), Service period (SP), Dry period (DP) and Calving interval (Cl). Result: In the present study, significant effect of breed was found on the TLMY and PY with the crossbreds recording higher values for both the traits. The means for TLMY, PY, LL, GP, SP, DP and CI were 1768.32±109.67 kg, 10.17±0.50 kg, 304.41±13.00 days, 277.71±2.24 days, 182.60±15.51 days, 167.47±10.68 days and 430.23±13.46 days in Sahiwal and 2983.45±78.32 kg, 14.92±0.36 kg, 324.71±9.29 days, 275.34 days, 181.09±10.91 days, 127.01±7.51, 413.61±9.47 days in crossbred cows respectively. It may be concluded that the productive performance of crossbred cows was better than that of indigenous cows.

Badak sumatera berada di ambang kepunahan akibat perburuan dan kehilangan habitat. Badak sumatera yang keluar dari habitatnya (doomed) dan terisolasi diselamatkan dan ditranslokasi ke Suaka Rhino Sumatera (SRS) Taman Nasional Way Kambas Lampung dalam rangka melindungi dan membiakkan mereka untuk konservasi. Salah satu penyebab kematian badak sumatera dewasa adalah gangguan jantung (kardiomiopati, miokarditis, infark jantung) dan kegagalan kardiovaskuler akibat penyakit paru-paru maupun gastrointestinal. Tujuan dari studi ini adalah menentukan teknik pemeriksaan ekokardiografi transthoraks pada badak sumatera, melihat struktur internal jantung dan mengetahui dimensi ukuran jantung badak sumatera. Ekokardiografi transthoraks dilakukan pada badak sumatera di Suaka Rhino Sumatera menggunakan transduser phased-array dengan frekuensi 3.5 MHz yang diletakkan di sela iga/intercostae parasternal thoraks sisi kiri (left parasternal) dan kanan (right parasternal). Pada pemeriksaan ekokardiografi, seluruh badak sumatera pada posisi berdiri dalam kondisi sadar tanpa anestesi. Gambaran ekokardiografi Brightness-mode pada badak sumatera paling jelas didapatkan dari sudut pandang left parasternal pada intercostae ke-3 dan ke-4 baik gambaran long axis maupun short axis. Gambaran ekokardiografi yang didapatkan dari sudut pandang left parasternallong axis dan right parasternallong axis berupa four chamber (atrium kanan, atrium kiri, ventrikel kanan, ventrikel kiri), sedangkan five chamber (empat ruang jantung dan aorta) didapatkan dari sudut pandang right apical dan left apical. Dimensi jantung berdasarkan pengukuran dengan Motion-mode adalah IVSd 2,12 ± 0,25 cm; LVIDd 9,70 ± 0,82 cm; LVPWd 1,82 ± 0,12 cm; IVSd/LVPWd 1,20 ± 0,21 cm; bobot ventrikel kiri 1723,90 ± 311,45 g; RWT 0,38 ± 0,05; IVSs 2,83 ± 0,30 cm; LVIDs 5,41 ± 0,96 cm; LVPWs 3,28 ± 0,3 cm; EDV 952,69 ± 231,36 mL; ESV 185,38 ± 90,93 mL; SV 767,31 ± 150,92 mL; CO 38769,19 ± 8222,88 mL/menit; EF 81,95 ± 5,55%; FS 41,96 ± 8,24%.

Background: In drug development process, poor aqueous solubility is one of the challenging factors. To design an oral dosage form, poor bioavailability is the major challenge. Objectives: The aim of this study was to improve the solubility of mebendazole (MBZ) by formulating solid dispersion (SDS) and self-emulsifying solid dispersions (SESDS). Mebendazole is an BCS class II drug having low solubility and can ultimately lead to poor absorption and low bioavailability. Methodology: Physical mixture and kneading method were employed to enhance the solubility of MBZ and prepare SDS and SESDS using poloxamer-188 as the hydrophilic carrier. Soybean oil, sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and Transcutol-P were used as oil, surfactant, and cosurfactant, respectively. Eight formulations were designed to formulate SDS by varying the ratios of MBZ and Poloxamer-188 (1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4). All formulations were evaluated for solubility studies, and a formulation that showed maximum enhanced solubility was selected to prepare SESDS of mebendazole. All of the prepared formulations were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and scanning electron microscopy to check chemical interactions, crystallinity, thermal stability, drug entrapment and morphological changes, respectively. Results: The results show that SDS and SESDS improved solubility compared to that of a pure drug. However, SESDS prepared using kneading methods showed the highest drug solubility (6.61 folds) as compared to pure drug. Conclusion: The study concluded that solubility of MBZ improved due to increased wettability, hydrophilicity of carrier and reduced crystallinity.
