The advent of new devices, technology, machine learning techniques, and the availability of free large speech corpora results in rapid and accurate speech recognition. In the last two decades, extensive research has been initiated by researchers and different organizations to experiment with new techniques and their applications in speech processing systems. There are several speech command based applications in the area of robotics, IoT, ubiquitous computing, and different human-computer interfaces. Various researchers have worked on enhancing the efficiency of speech command based systems and used the speech command dataset. However, none of them catered to noise in the same. Noise is one of the major challenges in any speech recognition system, as real-time noise is a very versatile and unavoidable factor that affects the performance of speech recognition systems, particularly those that have not learned the noise efficiently. We thoroughly analyse the latest trends in speech recognition and evaluate the speech command dataset on different machine learning based and deep learning based techniques. A novel technique is proposed for noise robustness by augmenting noise in training data. Our proposed technique is tested on clean and noisy data along with locally generated data and achieves much better results than existing state-of-the-art techniques, thus setting a new benchmark.
Anagallis arvensis (A. arvensis) belonging to the family Primulaceae is traditionally used for liver and kidney diseases. The aim of the study was to evaluate the uroprotective and hepatoprotective potentials of A. arvensis in cyclophosphamide-induced interstitial cystitis and paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity rat model, respectively. Nociception, bladder weight, vesical vascular permeability, Gray’s criteria for edema and hemorrhage, and levels of nitric oxide, catalase, and glutathione were estimated and studied in the cystitis model. Liver function test, lipid profile, and histopathological evaluation were carried out in the hepatoprotective activity. Oral administration of methanol extract of A. arvensis significantly reduced bladder weight, vesical vascular permeability, edema, hemorrhage, nitric oxide, IL-6, and TNF-α, while the level of catalase and glutathione peroxide was increased. In hepatoprotective activity, pretreatment with A. arvensis significantly decreased the level of liver markers (Bilirubin, ALT, AST, and ALP) and lipid profile (cholesterol, TG, LDL, and VLDL). Histopathological studies confirmed the biochemical findings of both studies. GC-MS analysis presented the presence of antioxidant phytoconstituents. Thus, it was concluded that A. arvensis might act as uroprotective and hepatoprotective due to the presence of antioxidant phytochemicals in the rodent model. Isolation and identification of phytochemicals present in the methanol extract of A. arvensis and evaluation of their exact mechanism of action become mandatory in future studies.
The photosynthetic efficiency in plants is affected by salinity. Focus of this study was to observe the consequences of salinity on the rate of photosynthesis in Moringa (Moringa oleifera L.) plants. Experiment was conducted under field conditions with 3 replicates and data of treated and non-treated plants was collected accordingly. Photosynthetic rate was affected by different levels of salt stress. The change in photosynthetic was attributes were determined by OJIP and light response curve calculations by using Fluor Pen [FP 100-PS (Photon system, Czech Republic)] and DUAL-PAM-100 (Walz, Germany). Salinity stress decreased chlorophyll a fluorescence characteristic. The significant quantity of electron transport (φEo), quantum yield of primary photochemistry (φPo), proficiency per trapped excitation (Ψo) and performance index of photosystem II (PSII). Performance index (PIABS) was also declined with salinity in M. oleifera. Our results showed that electron transport rate and photosynthetic rate were inhibited by salinity in M. oleifera. However, in M. oleifera electron transport pathway of PSII was repressed and found varied in plants which are salt resistant. It was concluded that Y(I), ETR(I), Y(II), ETR(II), and Y(NA) were decreased by increasing salinity while NPQ, Y(ND), Y(NO) and Y(NPQ) increased in plants having resistance to salt stress
BackgroundThe BK Polyomavirus (BKPyV) and JC polyomavirus (JCPyV) infections are widespread in human population and have been associated with severe kidney and brain disorders, respectively. The viruses remain latent primarily in reno-urinary tract, reactivating only in case of a compromised immune system. The seroepidemiology and molecular prevalence of BKPyV and JCPyV have been widely studied both in healthy and immunocompromised patients worldwide. However, data regarding the prevalence of these viruses in the immunocompetent or apparently healthy Pakistani population is lacking. Herein, we present the first ever report on quantitative prevalence of BKPyV and JCPyV in the peripheral blood of a randomly selected cohort of healthy Pakistani population.MethodsA total of 266 whole blood samples were examined. The subjects were divided into three age groups: ≤ 25 years (young), 26–50 years (middle) and ≥ 51 years (elder). Absolute real time PCR assay was designed to quantify the BKPyV and JCPyV viral copy numbers in the range of 106 to 100 copies/mL.ResultsOverall, BKPyV was detected in 27.1% (72/266) individuals while JCPyV in 11.6% (31/266) indicating significant difference (p < 0.005) in the distribution of these two viruses. The prevalence of BKPyV significantly decreased from 51% (49/96) in young age group to 8.2% (7/85) in eldest age group. Whereas, JCPyV positivity rate slightly increased from 8.3% (8/96) in young age group to 11.8% (10/85) in elder age group. The median viral load was calculated as 6.2 log and 3.38 log copies/mL of blood for BKPyV and JCPyV, respectively. Notably, no significant difference in viral load of either of the subtypes was found between different age groups.ConclusionThe current study provides an important baseline data on the prevalence and viral load of circulating BKPyV and JCPyV in Pakistani population. The prevalence and viral load of BKPyV was comparatively higher than JCPyV. The prevalence of BKPyV significantly decreased with increase in age while JCPyV positivity rate slightly increased with increasing age. Viral load of both BKPyV and JCPyV was not correlated with the individual ages.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/s12985-017-0752-2) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
