Study of Nutraceuticals and Phytochemicals for the Management of Alzheimer's Disease: A Review

Abstract: Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) affecting several people worldwide and has devastating impacts in society with a limited number of approaches for its pharmacological treatment. The main causes of AD are not clear. However, the formation of senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles, hyper-phosphorylation of tau protein, and disruption of redox homeostasis is the reason for AD. These causes have a positive correlation with oxidative stress, producing the reactive ions which are responsible for altering the p… Show more

“…The multi-target activities of doxycycline in different experimental conditions are shared by several other compounds, mainly of natural origin ( Wu et al, 2019 ; Ahmad et al, 2021 ; Maccioni et al, 2022 ). Rifampicin, another well-known antibiotic that independently of its anti-infectivity action has an important neuroprotective function: anti-AβOs, anti-TauOs and anti-inflammatory activities have been demonstrated by rifampicin in various experimental models ( Umeda et al, 2016 ) with a mechanism similar to that described for doxycycline ( Yulug et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Nutraceuticals are ingested in concentrated forms such as tablets, capsules, and drinks, and they have no negative effects, even at large doses. To avoid the negative side effects of the currently available medications, researchers are concentrating their efforts on identifying natural bioactive chemicals found in foods that can be used to treat AD [11][12][13][14]. The consumption of bioactive compound-rich foods or the administration of bioactive compound extracts can have a preventive impact against a variety of pathophysiological diseases.…”
