Objective is to determine the relation between pressure difference of a filter and parameters of a filtering layer to lengthen the protection period. The study involved elements of system analysis and mathematical modeling. Basic statements of the theory of nonstationary filtration and aerohydrodynamics were applied to develop a dust-loaded filter model. Dependence of pressure difference in a filter upon certain changes in packaging density of dust-loaded fibers has been determined; the dependence makes it possible to define minimum fiber packaging density to provide maximum dust capacity. To provide maximum dust capacity and high protective efficiency, the number of filtering layers in multilayered filters depends upon dust concentration within the air of the working zone, specified protection level of a respirator, air loss, and maximum dust volume which may be accumulated in the finishing filtering layer in terms of fiber packaging density being determined according to the minimum pressure difference in a filter at final time of respirator operation. A model of changes in pressure difference in filtering respirators in the process of aerosol particles depositing on filters has been improved; contrary to other available models, that one takes into consideration changes in fiber packaging density while dusting, filtration coefficient, and the amount of aerosol particles.

Purpose. Underground coal gasification, as a complex and technically difficult process, should be supported in many aspects by computer simulations or analytical calculations of rock mass behavior. However, little is known about the formation of stratification cavities in the roof rocks during coal seam gasification. To research the formation of stratification cavities and rocks deformations by mine pressure with the methods of calculation based on hypotheses or statistical information, a number of hypotheses are used. The main purpose is to examine the rock mass behavior and formation of stratification cavities during gasification of a thick coal seam.Methods. Analytical calculations were used as the research method for the work presented. The mathematical model of the stress-strain state of rock mass based on the theory of elasticity, resiliency, and maximum equilibrium, was developed and used in this paper.Findings. Critical analysis of geomechanical models of coal gasification together with their mathematical formulation was the result of considerations presented in this paper. Equations were derived for substantiating parameters of stratification cavities above the goaf of the underground gasifier. Subsequently, the volumes of stratification cavities depending on the length of gasification channel were calculated. The results have significant influence on gasifiers development and the final efficiency of gasification process.Originality. The research results were obtained from analytical calculations of rock mass behavior during thick coal seams gasification. The authors implemented a mathematical model based on the method suggested by professor A. Savostianov which was used in carrying out the calculations. Practical implications.The present study provides a starting point for further research and analytical calculations of rock mass behavior. The data and conclusions outlined in this paper may be useful in preliminary optimization and analysis of coal seams gasification. They can also be a point of reference for more advanced geomechanical simulations.

Purpose. At present one of the topical problems associated with coal seams mining is the issue of induced wall-rock coal-cutting with stone, which results in coal getting clogged with refuse stone and turning into the rock mass. All mines of Western Donbas produce coal with average ash content of 31 -49%. Selective mining can become a solution to this problem as it allows to incorporate reserves with unconventional thickness that are in the mine balance sheet. The main objective of the present research is to substantiate selective technology of coal extraction applicability for mining of ultra thin coal seams in conditions of Ukrainian mines. Methods.Hazardous substances' emissions into the atmosphere arising from implementation of bulk technology of coal extraction are estimated by analytical method.Findings. Consequences of the increase in power plants' production capacity achieved by utilizing low-ash coal extracted by selective technology are presented.Originality. The research looks into economic efficiency of implementing selective extracting technology for mining reserves with unconventional thickness in Ukrainian mines, particularly in Western Donbas. Practical implications.The conducted analysis demonstrated that implementation of new technology will allow to resolve complex issues of coal quality increase, maintenance, reinforcement and reuse of mine workings, backfilling of worked-out area and improvement of ecological situation in coal mining regions.
