Study of MazEF, sam, and phd-doc putative toxin–antitoxin systems in Staphylococcus epidermidis

Abstract: Today, to replace the antibacterial targets to overcome antibiotic resistance, toxin-antitoxin (TA) system is noticeable, where the unstable antitoxin neutralizes the stable toxin and protects the bacteria against the toxic effects. The presence and expression of TA genes in clinical and non-clinical strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis were investigated in this study. After identification of three TA pairs (mazEF, sam, and phd-doc) via existing databases (earlier, there has been no information in the case of… Show more

“…TA systems are broadly present in bacterial genomes, and toxin can target various cellular procedures under stress conditions ( 20 ). This process can lead to the prevention of cell growth and shift to a dormant state, which results in responding to stress conditions ( 21 , 22 ).…”

“…Comparisons of IBS patients with healthy participant in several lines of literatures have shown that the microbiota differs significantly between groups, which demonstrate the putative role of gut microbiota in IBS [16,17]. Postinfectious IBS; colonic fecal microbiota transplantation; and therapeutic effects of probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and non-systemic antimicrobials have also supported the contribution of the gut microbiota to the pathophysiology of IBS [18][19][20][21][22][23].…”

“…It was proposed that the fitness advantage of most bacteria is due to the costs associated with expression of TA genes. TA systems are abundantly existing in bacterial genomes and under stress conditions, toxin can target diverse cellular processes, such as translation, transcription, replication, and cell wall synthesis [8,21]. This process leading to the inhibition of cell growth, and switch to a dormant state, which cause to responding to stress conditions [22,23].…”
